Astro Empires is a addictive Space Strategy Game in real-time, in witch we can play in a huge universe with thousand of players. (More then 40.000 already). There we can build bases, spaceships, research new technologies, form alliances, fight epic Battles, and more.

First I thought it was just another clone (Ogame like). But looking at the screenshots they have a pretty neat map (which for example Ogame doesn't have, I think). Still I wonder why, in general, people want to play a clone if there are already much "better looking and balanced" games (like Ogame in this case)?

lol This was, actually, the game that introduced me to BB Gaming. Of course, back then it only had around 6k players. It was also my inspiration for some design work on GalactiConquest (I swear I'm going to find time to work on this sometime lol), both in terms of what TO do and what NOT to do lol.

Ultimately, I stopped playing because I was getting FAR too sucked into my guild and had no free-time outside of the game

Yes! I played for quite awhile... Had fun, learned a lot.

Haven't played ogame. Based on screenshots it may be similar, but I wouldn't consider it a clone. I'm not sure how many ways you can make planets+ships+research, but they are bound to have some things in common.

I played OGame too. They were pretty different as far as the gameplay was concerned. Mostly due to the way fleet movements / battles were handled.
