Top Pbbg
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:14:55 AM »
While waiting my partner to send me the design docs for the new version of blacksword rpg, i personalized a bit the Aarkvard topsites,  made a skin, and i launched a new topsite for persistent games at http://www.top-pbbg.com.

If the site gets popular i will add features to the script (if anyone have nice ideas please pm me, or post them here).

If you want to register your games you are very welcome, the first three sites owned by forum members that get registered (apart blacksword rpg) and gets 3000 unique votes, will get a free 125x125 banner positioned at the left side for two months.

Banner should be provided by the game owner and if possible, nicely designed.

Thanks,

-- Michele

I know that the site is pretty new and has no traffic and can offer very few out for the ins that will receive.

I am aware too there are tons of topsites...

So i am trying to compensate offering a left side 125x125 pixel banner for two months to the first three games that joins from now and they are at least active (sends some votes in). No need of 3000 votes :)

An interesting functionality for Game Owners has been added recently on Top PBBG, Game Owners now have the opportunity to publish News about their game and Offers.

Adding and Modifing a news or a Promo
In the User Control panel it's possible to add, edit, preview or delete a News or a Promo.
Edit and Delete are allowed until the news/promo is approved and published.

A News description can be maximum 2048 characters long, a Promo description can be maximum 512 characters long.

Viewing Promos and News

News and promos can be viewed in three different places:

  • Home page (Most recent news and offers)
  • Archive Page (All news and offers)
  • Game Details (All Game news and offers)

PBBG Visitors can subscribe to the feed on the Home page that will show the last 10 News and Offers.

Thanks;

The next big functionality i want to add it's a complete revised voting/ranking system,
that will combine votes coming from the game and votes from the site visitors.

I would like to enhance the graphic, but unfortunately hiring a graphic is beyond my current budget (that is 0).

I'm personally a fan of simple sites. I don't like sites that attempt to make themselves look more special by throwing up frilly graphics over the main game or site to make it appear better. Some of the bigger games out there do it alot. For that marketshare thread i saw, i looked at some of the games there and two of them were the same exact game apparently made from the stolen ed scripts(or whever they stole theirs from) and they just added in some graphics to make it look "special". If i had any graphical abilities, i'd help you. But alas, when i try to draw a stick man it ends up looking like those inkblot tests and on fire(it catches aflame upon competition for some odd reason).

As far as a voting site goes, it seems to be a really nice one. I've seen them for mmos, comics, pbbgs, and even top top sites. And well even though alot of them to tend to try to be the same the entire time. Yours has some things which make it look spretty awesome. Also that feature about allowing people to get rewards from it AFTER they successfully voted is very nice feature.

And as people say, graphics don't make it. The content and ability to function properly do. And your site seems to be doing just that. Even though it doesn't seem to be too big atm it's still seeming to be a really nice site. And i'll be sure to integrate it into my site(s) that i eventually get done. B/c i doubt i can pass up such an opportunity.

Thanks again ;)

Although I am not creating anything new (you can find reward system in other ranking sites, it's more difficult to find it in a topsite that uses Aardvark script), my objective is to build a site where independent developers and publishers can promote their sites,  although big commercial sites can bring you a lot of traffic.

When I am speaking of graphic i don't mean putting some cool picture or background etc but to enhance the layout in a professional way, probably with a minimalistic style.

well so far, it seems to be Monstersgame, Bitefight, crimson moon, Fallensword, Genleo, Eternal Duel(which stole their scripts from that game i don't remember the name of anymore), and numerous others out there.

If they weren't stolen ED scripts they SOMEHOW made the game look exactly like that crap pile of a game it was. ( i didn't care for it others do so meh). I find it VERY hard that games all have the SAME EXACT elements, and the same exact UI, plus seem to behave the same, plus have the same feature sets and weren't made from those ED scripts that were stolen way back when.

What game was ED?

Note: I have a pretty huge db of pbbg games and i visit them for sending invitations. A great % of them are mafia/crime games and they seem all the same.

i'm talking about the classic rpg and well this game was based off of a game that's not defunct.http://www.eternalduel.com/

It was all based off of a game that's pretty much, now dead. But some of the "coders" who came on at the end of that game's life stole all of their scripts and ran off with them. Then later on genleo stole their scripts from those people along with alot of other people. Their not stable by any means, but they're all over the internet.

And to the mafia/crime game, i think they're using a template of some sort. I believe i saw one around here... so they're all using the same script base and just modifying it. I don't know if their original source was stolen or not, but i do know that the ed scripts have been all over the net. I found out about them when i was talking to a friend about how i wanted to build my own pbbrpg. And he said well me and some of my friends are going to be using this site(cant' remember the url) but it had a ton of scripts from pbbg all stolen. And i know genleo has had their scripts stolen due to how their oldest members have said. Also the genleo game is by far extremely corrupt and a perfect example of how NOT to run your game.

Well, not all of them are the same. For example SoulHunters was/is (I don't know does it exist anymore) looking and behaving like ED, but was coded from scratch by ex-ED coder. Same thing originally with DarkCell and Dragon Swords (the game ED was based on and EDs owner). I haven't heard of all of those games, but I know atleast 4 other ex-ED coders who have made their game look like ED just because they like the UI.

ED source code was never published and only chosen few got the copies, myself included. I played that game over 5 years.

i never said it was published, but it can be said that people have stolen it. If one of those people got it, they could've used it and done it that way. And if this was a bigger market, such as an MMO for example, people would be going crazy. The newest example of this thing is Alganon, it's got the same UI as WoW(i don't play either, i tried wow after 4yrs of begging from friends it's boring) and people are huddling around to see what blizzard is going to do. If that game makes it big, i'm sure they'll go in and sue the alganon people. Not sure if the game's still alive, but if it is and gets even remotely big, blizzard can destroy them. Since UI design is something special so to speak. If you use the same UI design from another game and just "recode it" into your own game. Well honestly, it's still the same code. So there's not much to be said about it. If it also has teh same feature sets, well then there's that it's all over. There is a bit of overlapping as that's impossible to get away from. All mmos who have good UI design do tend to overlap a bit. But when it's identical and uses the same features, that's what i call thievery.

Ah, cool.  I suppose I'll sign my in-development game up, but two questions first:

1) Do I need to have a banner right away when I sign up?  I've got next-to-no artwork at the moment, but I suppose I could throw something together if needed.

2) Based on this description, would you say it belongs in the "business/trade simulation" or "space" category?  It's definitely set in space, but the only currently-available activities are basically trade and combat and long-term plans include players building factories and basically becoming responsible for all aspects of the in-game economy.

You don't need to provide a banner; if you don't provide any, the default banner of top-pbbg will be shown.

To tell you the truth, that category should be revised. Space is not a category, I think it's more a game-setting. I would put your game into the Strategy category.

A thing I should add would be a field for the game "setting". Your game then will be
in the Strategy Category, Game-Settings: Space.
