How easy would it be to create a explore script. Where you have a map and you can see your self progress through the world? I would be coding it with PHP but what types of things should I look up before starting

I have a little script here: http://www.bbgamezone.net/map/
Is that what you're looking for?

It needs a lot of work but if you want, I can post the script here.

I'll post it here  B)

Here's a sample map file:
Code: [Select]
|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|1|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|2|3|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|w|w|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|t|t|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|t|t|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|w|w|g|g|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|w|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|f|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|b|b|b|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|f|f|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|b|b|b|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|8|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|4|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|7|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|6|5|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|
|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|g|

You can compare this map file to the actual map you see in the demo link I posted.

The pipelines represent separate tiles, while the letters/numbers inside represent the image file (g = g.JPG, 4 = 4.JPG, etc.) Players may only step on the g tiles, which are grass.

Sorry, no map editor is included.

As I said, you'll probably need to do a lot of work with this to add it into your game. Good luck :)

Oh yes, and if you didn't notice, you can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move around.

Wouldnt it be better to go a little more real time with something like that?
Perhaps using flash or something like that?
a user refreshing pages to move across a graphical map constantly would get very annoying wouldnt it?
At least with a text browser, there is something to read, and something which may happen.

maybe a little but some people don't have flash and the way the script works it shouldn't be that much on a problem with slow computer and it works with the ARROW keys

While Flash and Java are both good solutions, as he said, not everybody has them or is allowed to run them on certain computers. And you aren't strictly limited to working with just the data downloaded. When you hit the margins you should be able to use AJAX to get more map downloaded from the server to continue moving. That would also be your solution for having certain tiles trigger certain actions as well.

The JavaScript would alert the server that a certain location was touched and it would come back with new information and interface you would display on other parts of the screen.

That would be very very resource instensive on the server, you would need to split maps into many different areas, imagine how many updates the server would have to do for each person, heh.

I dont think so wat would be the point of exploring when there are no functions on the map like if you go to a door and the door doesnt let you in the shop or whatever

My map system uses a large background image, and simply updates/displays depending upon the players "block location". Each map is 280 blocks, and people/doors fit in "blocks".

Thats a lot like how I want my maps to be like...but the problem im having is...scripting a certain block to take me to map 2. When I step on that block it should take me to where ever I want it to take me. in my game...
