There is no such thing really as a "php engine" you can write php in just notepad or the much better notepad++.  Then you need a webserver with php enabled to test your php pages on.

having said that i would suggest that you use a proper Php IDE.....There are plenty out there, personally i use eclipse for all my coding, but there are also so great IDE's that are specialised for Php...

with a proper IDE you should get syntax highlighting, code templates, code formating, debuging support, which are all really good.

Nah, using IDEs will lead to lazy coding habits if you are learning to code with one, only real thing you need is highlighting so you can see are you making any syntax mistakes. I noticed it when I started to code PHP, I got too used to the program I used and after I changed the OS I had a bit troubles to get my code to work because the IDE didn't fix or show my mistakes.

I can send you pics of my cocks if you want reference.

oh so you mean with a proper IDE your much more productive than without one.... I agree

as for platform independance....hence why we use eclipse, half our shop runs windows boxes the other half a number of variations of linux...and there are a couple of apples around too.
