VRML?
« on: February 26, 2009, 01:29:50 AM »
I've not been actively programming for the web in some time. When I was this was a neat technology. Was just wondering if it had vanished or if anyone had considered putting it to simple use.

I can't find anything usable.

It seems flash does the job... There where some 3d flash libs for gaming etc.

The new version of VRML is called X3D.

As far as I can remember the main downside of it used to be that it was impossible for users to interact with each other at all, due to the fact that like old HTML, it loaded and then it was rendered(?) unchanging until you refreshed. I'm sure they've made some improvements by now though.
Projects: Pith Framework (at 0.5), CactusGUI (at 0.3)

Hey, as VRML runs (normally) in a web browser you can use Javascript to make stuff interactive, though main problem with VRML is that it requires a plugin to function, which no-one installs. Also from what I've seen the next version of Javascript is going to support OpenGL, though you can do some pretty cool looking stuff with VRML, one of my uni projects was to make a fish tank, and get stuff moving etc, was pretty fun, though utterly pointless :P
