Hi Angel,

Google hosts a growing number of Javascript libraries for web developers to reference as a free and open Content Delivery Network. But these are just used by your own websites so accessability remains the developers problem

They also have a growing number of services that they make avaialble through their published API's ( I assume your asking about these ) Where the API delivers data in raw format eg xml, json etc then once again its up to the developer to address accessability issues. Where its something like google maps.... then im not sure that the developer has any controll over the accessability of the resultant content.

However i would love to stand corrected on this.

Surprisingly a quick 2 min Googling effort turned up no results of any significance, perhapes it would be worth the effort to actually contact google itself and ask them...either one of the dev team members from the API that your looking to make use of, or one of their experts on accessability e.g. T.V. Raman who is mentioned in this podcast http://google-code-updates.blogspot.com/2007/09/google-developer-podcast-episode-nine.html has apparently written custom clients for some of the google API'S

Why how daft of me, of course you are quite right.. who better to ask than the google team!

I got this infomation from a book, that their is a way to make the google maps partly accessible and think it is somehow related to a text or xml file, but off the top of my head I cant recall, the book is "Practical web 2.0" and is mentioned in passing in chapter 13.

I will have a re-read of the book and then take your advice and email the google team.

I will let you all know the outcome and whether or not google maps are able to be made accessible for the blind :D

thanks a bunch

Its something that is often overlooked, many people think of big successfull companies as faceless monsters whose staff as evil drones that wouldnt be bothered to give you the time of day.

But youd be surprised how often people are willing to help, or at least get engaged in a conversation as long as you approach them the right way. Spend some time finding out the best person to ask, formulate your questions in a clear and concise manner, show that youve already been working or thinking about the problem....

actually its a lot like asking for help on technical forums.....just more so.

This also works great if you have questions about points raised in a technical book....

I think at the fundamental psychological level its all about giving the 'expert' the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise...

and occasionally if your lucky youll raise a question that they hadnt thought of before....
