I'm not sure it's better but I was using WAMP for one moment when not developing online

What do you mean by "something better"? I'm also using WAMP, btw.

Do you use windows oder linux?
Do you mean something faster?

On windows I'm using XAMP from apachefriends.org. Under linux, there are funny things like lighttpd or nginx around.

You can allways install apache, MySQL and PHP yourself .....

Its what i did on my windows box, on the linux box i used my distro's automatic package tool....somewhat counter intuitively i found the linux install easier ;)

I think this is by far and away the best option.  I tried using packages at first but they always seem to have a lot of extra stuff or complications when installing.  Just did the bare minimum apache, mysql, php, and phpmyadmin on my comp for testing.  Runs great with no problems and little system resources.  (It's on my older comp not the new fast one so the minimal approach was especially nice)

Plus, installing the base systems yourself is a good educational opportunity. Take the opportunity to learn where you can, it will help you if you decide to go into the professional market.
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

On windows, I use Apache2Triad, I think the best Ive used so far, takes longer to load, but I think it is faster than XAMPP.

On linux, just install apache, mysql, php5, phpmysql, php5gd (not sure if there the exact package names lol), make all the permissions right, download phpmyadmin and install and your set. Maybe try installing FTP (by the way if anyone has gotten an FTP server to work with users rather than anon in ubuntu 8.x, PM me) so you can work from elsewhere on the network.

If you have the opportunity to create a linux server, and you havent before, I say take it. As Makari said, it is a good educational opportunity. And theres a sense of satisfaction when you log into your IP and it actually works :P

EDIT: I just realised the date of the other posts... Sorry about the semi gravedig...
