Hire volunteer developers and save money
« on: March 30, 2010, 09:48:27 AM »
To all game admins looking to hire developers,

We think we'll be able to save outsourcers (game admins looking to hire developers) a lot of money!

You might like to try Coding4Free.net, where you can have a volunteer developer complete your project. Instead of paying large sums, all you would have to pay is $5 to list your project. Once your project is listed, you can have it completed by a volunteer developer for FREE. You pay them zilch. So all you pay is $5.

It may sound too good to be true, but our volunteer developers are looking for experience, so small-moderate scale projects are ideal for them to build their portfolio of work. Do come and see for yourself.

If you would like to know more, or how coding4free.net can help you in your outsourcing needs, feel free to drop us an informal email using the contact form provided on the website.

You might have more luck on this forum if it were geared towards artists that work for free,  the common complaint is lack of artwork not coding.

Why would you pay for a volunteer? You'd have to be completely retarded to use this service...

Volunteer developer who will work on major scale project for 0$ will code in his free time, maybe he will be learning PHP so that can make your project has a lot of "holes" in security (maybe some really stupid XSS hole :) ), not to mention resource management :) I know when I started my PHP "road" ... my scripts were full of shit and holes, BUT if I got an offer to work on some nice project I would do it for free :)

Cheap is not always the best solution
Hit the nail on the head there! I have an order of preference when it comes to projects:

Best Solution: Do it myself (because I know what I want)
2nd solution: Hire quality professional (because I don't have time)
3rd solution: Find open-source project (because I can't afford #2)
4th solution: Give up / Terminate project (because I can't get it done "right")
5th sollution: Farm to someone for volunteer work (because I'm a retard)
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Sounds about right to me.  I could farm out my coding to a volunteer... but, if I did, I'd expect to end up spending more time cleaning up his mistakes than it would have taken me to just write it myself in the first place.

I had a nice experience from volunteers (once :D). It depends on your writing design docs and explaining skills, sometimes you can make it work.

Some small, well defined parts of the code could be done by volunteers. But still all of them had at least 10 years of experience in my case, the 3-5 years exp listed on the website is scary.

There is a reason why we recommend small-moderate scale projects, on the website you will see that we urge outsourcers to use our services for non-urgent work, projects where you can tolerate some delay and trial and error but where you are still looking for a bargain. Of course, there is no guarantee that a volunteer will develop your work to the high standards of a professional, but some of the volunteers are themselves pretty good at what they do. It's like getting a job. You're good at what you do but if you have no experience, the world just ignores you, albeit your skills are more honed than the next man's.

Coding4Free.net is open to all kinds of volunteers, be they coders, artists, writers or cartographers. You can search for relevant volunteers through the website.

It doesn't hurt to read the post a couple of times before posting a reply. The fee you pay is the listing fee, a minimal flat fee which gets your project listed. This is all you have to pay, whereas if you were outsourcing your projects to a professional, you would pay in the region of $100 - $300 for a small script modification.

It is recommended that outsourcers post their projects in small chunks or post small-moderate scale projects for better results and penetration.

Think of it like this. You pay $5 to see if your project can be completed by a volunteer. If you're not happy with it, $5 is all you loose.

If you have further queries or would like to know how coding4free.net can help outsourcers as well as volunteers, please feel free to contact us.

You're forgetting opportunity cost.  If I spend six months waiting for a volunteer to get around to providing me with a steaming pile of code that makes Matt's Script Archive look like Fort Knox, then I'm not just out the $5.  I've also lost six months that could have been spent on having it developed by someone who actually knows what they're doing.  In an industry where "good enough today" beats "perfect tomorrow", every time and twice on Sundays, a six month delay is crippling.  If you have any competitors at all, it's likely to be Game Over on the spot.
