Hiring or Buying Game Ideas!
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:41:05 AM »
Our company is fairly remote, so it's hard to find local help. So we've decided the next best thing might be to work remotely with people.

Because a remote person couldn't be internal and take part in brainstorming sessions, we've decided to buy game ideas instead. So, if you have a fully-fleshed out game idea (including story, mechanics and such), then we'd like to hear it!

How much would you pay for something like this?

Naturally, that'd depend on the idea and how fleshed out it is.

The world I know is ending, now they are buying even ideas :D

But why don't you use any existing already implemented ideas in other games? And if you are buying an idea, what are the requirements? I mean, all ideas (except those that sux completely) will be based, at least partially, on existing games...

There's a big difference between a generic idea, and a fully fleshed out game. There's the core idea, but then there's mechanics, gameplay, leveling, balancing etc.

I know what you mean. I am a pure coder, and I don't like designing the formulas and mechanics detail, if the type of game is not something I like to play myself.
What I have done in a past project was hire a pure game designer.
You probably won't find many in this forum. Pure game designers usually hang out in board game design forums.

Precisely! We like creating cool implementations and such, but the core mechanics are the pain. How to balance this? How to do that? Annnooying.

Trillian used to auto-sign in. Not sure when it happened that it stopped, but I forgot all about it

How about a Mafia game crossed with a market game wrapped in a pseudo-RPG-adventure layer?
Or
A Game of Thrones inspired 2 sided game ( RPG and Strategy-Game )
In the RPG you roam the country working as a mercenary and gaining favors with a lords, going to tournaments, helping the villagers by killing some outlaws etc.
In the Strategy you are the lord, conquering new territories, building up your armies and your buildings, going to battle against opposing lords etc.

If you're ever on IRC, I'd much enjoy discussing design ideas (or I guess we could do it here, probably in a different thread though).  However, I've mostly taken myself out of the business of creating BBGs.  I still love them, but find the work to profit ratio to be too small.

What do you mean by work to profit ratio?
Do you mean the turn over for the development cost is too long, or maintenance is not worth the revenue?
I would like to know this because I am entering the business.
