Cubicle Battles
« on: November 14, 2008, 12:40:19 PM »
This game is optimized for Fire Fox 3 and Google Chrome

http://www.cubiclebattles.com/

Cubicle Battles is a sophisticated browser MMORPG that does not use the tired, unimaginative fantasy or mafia settings that plague browser games. You and your fellow players are all working and fighting within the head quarters of the most powerful company on the face of the planet. You, and if you make a corporation (guild), are striving to be the richest, most powerful employee possible, armed with pencils, staplers, suits and briefcases, you take the fight, and lawsuits, straight to the dome of your opponents!!

But beware, because something is not right within the company walls.... can you uncover the mysteries that abound the hallways and cafeterias before your opponents?

Our Team

Kevin (Canadian) - Coder, Game Designer, Big Boss Man
Benny (Swedish) - Battle Animation
Trollface (Brasilian) - Lead Artist, Web and Game Designer

We started Cubicle Battles mid October, picked up Benny recently, and are now chugging along at super sonic speed to make the contest deadline!

Storyline

Gill Bates is the CEO of Macrohard Technologies, the biggest and most powerful company of all time. After conquering the business world and achieving the impossible time and time again, Bates grew tired of his routines and sunk into a deep depression that even inifinite wealth could not cure.

One day, Gill Bates' man-chimp assistant, Stephen Careers, approached him with an idea.

"I've been concerened about you lately Gill... You don't seem to have the same zest for life as you used to have. Since conquering the business world with your brains, you have grown tired of the same old routines. I have come up with a brilliant idea to help restore you to your former, cheery self! Why don't we allow companies and employees to duke it out in a gladiatorial-type arena, and see which businessmen are the smartest, toughest and strongest! As a matter of fact, you can oversee the competitions personally! Allow me to deal with the boring, hum-drum, day to day work that has sapped your creative energies. Maybe this will help you get over your depression, yeah?"

Bates pondered the idea for a while. A smile slowly started to appear on his face, growing from a small smirk to a full blown laugh as Bates replied:

"You know Stephen, I think you may be right! I want you to set up a battle arena here in the Macrohard headquarters. Perhaps seeing men beat each other with briefcases instead of court cases might cheer me up. I think I may even take the top contenders as my own personal team, and together we shall dominate the globe's business markets!"

As so the Cubicle Battles have begun. Do you have what it takes to answer the call and prove your worth in the Cubicle Battles Arena?

Game Features

- The game is a Turn Based, MMORPG. CB borrows heavily from Diablo's itemization, stat and skill systems. The combat itself is akin to Ogre Battle, or Final Fantasy Tactics for you younger players out there. You can line up along a grid, and standing in different grids affects your damage done and damage dealt.

- PvP First and Foremost! Cubicle Battles is primarily a PvP game. Cubicle Battles also fully supports a deep PvE game for casual players as well! You can level from 1 to 99 by just beating on other players, by beating up on NPCs, or a mix of both! The choice of game play is up to you!

- Massive Battles. Cubicle Battles supports 15 v 15 player matches! The battle field gets cramped with 30 players, but thats what we are aiming for, pure mayhem!

- Own Real Estate. Being GvG based, players actually can own Floors of the Building you are working in for their Corporations (guilds).

- Auto Fighting. The game was originally designed for offline, team based PvP. This means that once a battle starts, whether PvP or PvE, the game auto fights based on whatever Tactics you have given your character! Start a fight and go read a book, play with your kids, finish your homework, go take a shower, whatever! Hopefully when you return you will have won!

- Tactics. 185 unique commands that you can string together anyway you want for your Character to use in fights. This means that more complicated battles can be fought by you while you are away. Your character will heal himself, attack dying players, use certain skills when certain requirements by your commands are met. All very intuitive and easy to program. No need to use code to create tactics. We have a simple click and drag menu for this!

- Fully Customizable PvP set up. Have a fight from 1v1 duels to 15 v 15 PvP mayhems, ban certain classes from participating, make the two teams uneven for harder fights, create longer turns for deep tactical thinking or shorter turns for speed playing, limit the level requirement to join, and more!

- Point Based, yes, but... This game is a point based game !ONLY! for PvE. Since we want to keep the game completely free for PvP addicts, playing in PvP matches cost no points, ever!

- Classes. There are 5 classes to choose from. Each class has two sexes, so there are 10 different sets of clothing in total! Pants on a male Janitor are different than a female janitor! Each class also has 4 races; White, Asian, Black and Hispanic.

- Quests. The game will have over 150 quests.

- Weapons and Armor. There are easily going to be over 5000 unique sprites. So when you wear different armor, it will always LOOK different! Take that Diablo!

- There will be 10 game maps to play on total. In each map there will be 3 or 4 visually unique battle grounds to fight NPCs on!

- NPCs. Cubicle Battles will NOT recycle sprites. We will not have a blue version of a green NPC. Once you leave a battle ground, you will never see that same NPC again.

- Animation. Cubicle Battles has smooth, beautiful web-based animations for combat (A la Final Fantasy 3) complete with some cheesy sounds.

- Ease of Use. Included throughout Cubicle Battles in various places will be a very extensive and detailed "How to Play" manual. We hate how most 'professional' Browser MMOS make it easier to convince Satan to wear a wedding dress than it is to figure out how to play their games.

- Tattoos. Tattoo Parlor for players who wish to give their characters tattoos.

- Item Reconfiguration. Since this game is very graphical, you may like the look of what you have. So we are able to take the stats of whatever items you own, and place them on other items you own. So that level 11 Unique Mop of Death won't go into the trash! You can take the stats of a common level 25 Mop and place it on the Unique one you like!

- Communication. There is an extensive in game communication system for Corporation management, detached window chatting, item trading, in game emailing, and other little piddly things.

- And many other features that are not planned to be in game until release.... and are hush hush :)

Screen Shots

Yes the game is playable at this time, but as it is in an Alpha Stage, we are select in who we let in. And no, Registration is not functional yet as we have disabled it for now.

- Hopefully we do win. Hey, you never know! Maybe we do finish the game. Hey, miracles happen!
Lol. You're totally right :P.

Update

I have designed and finished three more NPC Robots.
Two locations, the Kiosk and Human Resources, have had a face lift, and have each been given a friendly NPC.
I have written and completed more quests and have developed the story more.

A bug detection script has been written and is now being used to alert Kevin of errors during combat.

Just to give an idea of our itemization system, everything you pick up, you can wear, and it shows on your character. We didn't want a tired and boring Diablo item system where every single item looks the same. When you pick up a pencil, there are 12 variations of it for you so see. Same for shirts, hats, etc....

Set items are especially different, like the Middle Manager's "The Mobster" Set piece, consisting of a Hat, Jacket, Pants and Shoes.

And with our planned Item Reclassification option, down the road though, if you like the look of an item, you can always keep the sprite but transfer the stats of a better item. For example, The Mobster Set Hat is rank 6. If you like the look of the hat, you can carry the sprite with you until level 99 if you like, always dumping better stats into the Hat from higher ranked sprites. So nearly infinite combinations are possible!

And don't forget! With our tattoo parlor, you can be as nearly naked as you want, with stats from regular clothing and weapons transfered onto your body tattoos! Or mix and match your favorite clothing / weapon sprites with your favorite Tattoo sprites!

Actually this must be a coincidence....

I use Photoshop CS2. I had draw the characters roughly on paper, and scan them in for alterations and colorization. (I am a comic book artist)

But last night, no joke, I was chilling at my friend's apartment and she showed me Illustrator (she is a college prof. who teaches classes such as Illustrator). I never used Illustrator before, and she recolored my robots. And I loved it!

For this project i am going to finish the game off in Photoshop, due to the throwback to the 16bit area with the pixel graphics, but my next browser project, whatever that may be, I will try to see if I can do the graphics in Illustrator.

This is an example of the drawn art...

And this is an example of my drawing field in Photoshop cs2.

Ask me whatever questions you want. I am not a digital pro at all, but what little I know I will be more than glad to share with you all!

These robots are beyond easy to draw. Trust me. They are just a collection of circles. I bet you can draw these little guys in a matter of a few hours easy. Just copy what I got, and also google Megaman, my main source of ideas for robots from when I was a kid.

The trick is to use a pencil, and just draw a circle. then from there, just draw whatever you want coming out of the circle, and shape your drawing like putty in that way. Don't worry about the pencil looking crappy. Take a pen, and slowly trace over the pencil lines you like. Then erase all the pencil lines, and you are done.

The great thing about robots is that they are completely imaginative. There are no proportions to worry about!

I don't know what your level of artistry is, but if I said anything you already knew, just disregard it then. Just giving you some ideas just in case you wanted to give it a shot.

It is playable. Just in a alpha sort of state. Many of the clothing graphics are not in game yet, so everything looks like one graphic in your inventory screen, and there is no "How To Play" yet, so players would be confused as to what to do, and that is one thing we do not want players to feel.

I have jumped on many BBG's and have quit in the first 2 minutes because there is no way of figuring out what to do because the creator was too lazy to make a proper "How To Play" manual somewhere.

If anyone wants to give this game a shot in its current state, jump on my forums and I will give you the instructions to do so.

When the registration will be enabled?
(by the way, do not depend on HowToPlay too much, most players won't read it anyway)

Registration is having a small issue which we are trying to resolve. If you want the log in info, just register on the forums and we will let you in game.

And thanks for the advise  ::)

We have done some heavy updating;

- Main Page updated graphically.
- Registration is up and running! There is a small issue with the email you receive, so check your junk mail if you don't get it.
- Log In window graphic redone and now has better functionality.
- How To Play is now up and running! Learn to play now dammit!
- Screen Shots is also working with ... Screen Shots!

Remember that this is our PRE-BETA. So if stuff don't work, you have been warned!

If you come across graphical issues !!!REFRESH REFRESH REFRESH!!!!!! This will be your best friend!

ATTENTION - We run a separate server for our battles, so if you try to fight in the game, and the battle starts, but the sprites do not appear and nothing happens, that means our Battle Server is currently turned off.

ATTENTION - Also, since this actually PRE-Beta, our information server gets updated daily with new graphics and code. This means that your Characters (and even your registration info) might get wiped, sometimes on a daily basis. So for now Register at your own risk!!!

Like the new main page. However, an option to turn off the music would be nice.

All looks great dude. Screen shots are looking good.

Yay for characters getting wiped!

We are working on a button to turn music off. It isn't priority, but it will be there. And the music is just a placeholder. We will be making our own.

Also, we are reworking our Building Map so it occupies one screen. Our scrollable map was confusing some players.
