Daimyo Online
« on: October 22, 2008, 06:26:02 PM »
Here's my entry, hopefully things in life won't take away too much free time and I will meet the deadline.

Project Name: Daimyo Online
Team: Me
Framework: A few bits here and there from previous projects (login, messaging, etc)
Platform: PHP and PostgreSQL, with bits of JavaScript
Description: Daimyo Online is a browser based RPG / Strategy game based loosely on feudal Japan. Players will take on the role of a lowly samurai, and attempt to work their way up the ladder of power and influence. Starting as a homeless ronin, he must compete with his rivals for land, power, and honor. Players will be able to improve their character's personal stats (increasing effectiveness) as well as manage their family / clan and any lands owned. Dueling, diplomacy, and open warfare are all important parts of the path to becoming a powerful daimyo.

About me: I'm a programmer and database administrator by profession, and a wannabe hobbyist game developer. I saw a link to this contest from a game development site and figured it would be an excellent chance to try my hand at a smaller project with a deadline (which will hopefully give me the drive to actually get something done).  I've been tossing this idea around in my head for a while now, and this is the perfect opportunity to make it a reality.

Hehe, no, you didn't. Umm... good luck!

You'd probably get more responses if you posted a demo or screenshots of what you've got so far, if you're looking for feedback.

If you wanna know: I love the setting (japan, samurais, ... ) , but I don't know I'm going to like the game  :).
It sounds very... well... like other games? It kinda depends on how things exactly will work. So how the features concrete will be.

Fair enough, looking back at my post it does sound more like marketing crap than a decent description of game play or anything useful  ;D  I'll try to better explain...  I unfortunately do not have a demo or screen shots at this point, I'm working on the functionality and hoping to pretty it up later after I have something playable.

Players will be able to build and control their character in an RPGish style... There are stats such as strength, intelligence, etc, and skills which can be improved and offer various actions the player can take. They can train, take missions, travel around exploring, duel against other samurai, etc.

They can also spend time managing any lands they hold (if any), setting taxes, ordering the construction of buildings or areas, conscripting an army, etc. These activities would increase the player's power base allowing more political influence and military strength (useful for taking over lands, or proving themselves to their lord who may grant more power or responsibility).

They also may decide to swear fealty to a lord (NPC or another player), or find other players to swear fealty to themselves. This should grow into a hierarchy of clans and clans-within-clans, and offer pretty decent political power struggles. While it would be foolish to defy one's lord, it would be understandable to undermine one's peers to look better and gain more honor for oneself. A lord can charge taxes, "borrow" armies, and expect a samurai to follow him into battle, but can also lend help when needed and give out missions.

I hope to create a game that gives players a chance to role play a Japanese feudal aristocrat with all of the violence and politics and power struggles.  A major influence in this game design was Sword of the Samurai, if anyone has played it (is my age hanging out?).

I am withdrawing my entry from the contest.

I do plan to continue development, but I need more time than is allotted.  Real Life (tm) has interfered too greatly (hey, I need to make a living right?) and I won't even be able to get a crappy pre-beta thing up by next week.

Such is life.
