My entry - Booze Quest
« on: October 19, 2008, 09:51:10 PM »
Team: Me + any artists I can corral into doing some pixel art  :P

Code Base: ASP.NET

Game Type: I tend to be tight-lipped on my game ideas until I have some way of proving I thought them up ;). The game's an RPG with a twist. Lots of gamer inside jokes. Has base-building elements. Focused on playing for half an hour or less per day - a nice light game that you can come to in a coffee break. Two months is short, but I think I can make an open beta (with the low-level content in) by December.

Updates blog: I won't be posting updates to this thread, but once I secure hosting I'll keep a dev blog on the site. Don't expect anything to be hosted for another month yet.

...that is, unless my classes gang up on me and I have to withdraw  ;) but let's hope that doesn't happen.

This sounds like it is going to be a fun game.
I'm not slacking off. My code's compiling.

Update:

Well, never underestimate the power of having a very well fleshed-out design doc! I've just been flying on this project! I thought I'd post a little "Pre-pre-alpha" screenshot of my tiling engine used in the base-building portion of the game. It already supports "click for info", "move tile", "sell tile", "build tile -> choose from list", and "store tile" functionality. I'm working on building a general system which I can populate with content at a later phase. the screenshot shows off the "info" functionality.

Don't laugh at my 5-second temporary icons!  8)

Update: I'm pleased to say that I've secured hosting and should be entering a closed beta by Thanksgiving.

The game will (temporarily) be hosted at npcrpg.info (because the domain was $1 :D). Currently there is only a forum at npcrpg.info/forum, but the game should be up and hosted soon!

EDIT: Scratch that, the forum and the game are both up. It's still in a *closed* beta, however, so don't be trying to make player accounts ;)

A few more teaser shots...

First, the world. From here, survey the world and plan the quests you want to send adventurers on (rather, plan what you want them to kill):

And what fantasy tavern would be complete without brewing?

Massive apologies for being out of the loop, we've got finals + year-end projects due here at Uni. I've been working steadily on Booze Quest though: I'd like to cordially invite anyone and everyone for some refreshments in Booze Quest's open beta!

There's no more beta password! I'd suggest starting by reading the manual. Currently it's only a tutorial but it should get you going. The game ticks every half-hour.

Current issues:
-no spells in the game yet
-only low-level content (4 zones)
-still some placeholder art (looks like a black box or grey X)

Quite a bit to do in a week!  8)

I need two things:
-Bug reports! Submitted in the forums or to bugs@npcrpg.info please
-balancing. I'm currently using the game balancing strategy of "wing it", so if you spot a drink / attraction / class / mob which is way over/under powered, lemme know!

Very nice game, some damn funny comments though out the game (great personal touch).

Only recommendation is a tick counter to let the player know how long till the next tick, unless there is one and I just missed where it is. I know the manual said 30 mins but I'm lazy ;)

Great job.

Having an apostrophe in your Tavern name causes a server error.

Oh, there will be. :P Once I get onto writing the PvP elements ( I should have some kind of bare-bones system by the competition end date), you'll see much more player-player interaction.

Thanks! I'll add that in with the next update.

Ugh, yeah, that bug slipped through. I actually fixed it yesterday but I'm waiting on the update.

I expanded my bar. Now, when I want to built, the image of the bar is not working correctly. It isn't causing any problems, but it's just a bug you should fix.

Did you extend the ticks to an hour? If not, it appears that it's skipping ticks. A couple times now my quests have taken an hour to be accepted and when they supposedly took 4 ticks to complete, they had taken 4 hours rather than 2. I really hope this is not intentional. Even the 30 min ticks seemed a bit too long for me.

that's not good. I'll go check the tick logs.

Did you offer quests at less than 'fair price' (the price that automatically fills in when you select it)? If so, there's a less than 100% chance that the quest will be accepted. Also, the quest needs available appropriate-level adventurers around in the bar (level 1 guys for a level 1 questing zone, etc.)

Nope, always between 100 - 150%. Also, as I mentioned, even after they were accepted, they were taking twice the amount of ticks displayed, i.e. it stated that it took 4 ticks to complete, yet it took 4 or more hours in actuality. Iffy on the exact time since there's nothing that displays when a quest began.

Geeze, I don't think your game likes me. lol I brewed a drink (Short and Stout?), tried to go to my basement to add it to the menu, and received a server error. Now I cannot access anything without hitting the error. I can copy the stack trace to you if needed.

Aha,

Yeah, there was a problem in the description for Short and Stout which was mucking up the game. It's fixed as far as I can tell (I'm able to log into your account fine now), but let me know if it isn't.

In fact, that might've been causing your tick problems, too.

By the way, ten thanks for the good bug description! I zeroed in on that one in no time.

I discovered Fallen Temple (or something like that). But when I want to select it for a quest it gives an error.

Hm, the boss in that zone appears to have an error.

Sorry, but I've just had to remove it for the time being. It'll be back. :D

By the way, don't bother exploring past where you're at now - there are no more zones to find yet :(
