My entry - Gang Riot
« on: October 10, 2008, 05:27:26 PM »
I will be joining this contest as well!

Don't worry, I won't be picking the winners :)

The team: Just me! I am a PHP coder, and my graphics are horrible. I'll either use very little graphics or stolen graphics.

WANTED: I need an artist :P Anybody out there willing to work with me to create an epic gangster/real estate game? Looking for a simple digital cartoonish style!

The game: I'm planning on creating a strategic, team-based economy game. I'll post more details on this as I get started on the game.
I'll also post a demo as soon as I get some coding done!

Update: Actually, I don't think my plan for an economy game will be achievable within two months. I think I should take that one slowly and develop it some other time :)

Instead, I've decided to take on.... the gangster theme! I have some (hopefully) original ideas, which will make my gangster game unique, fun and more gangster.

Just in case there's any misunderstanding - when I say gangster, I don't mean the mafia kind of gangster, I mean the gangsters that are in gangs.

no sure if you saw my post on gdnt or phpfreaks but I have planned on making an economic game for my site, (i'll be making tutorials along the way.)

Would you like to team up?

The game I have invisioned could definately be broken out into segments which would allow for production to be much quicker and smoother as to get to a beta testing stage.

Let me know.

My basic idea of the game

Stock market role playing game

I think it would be an appropriate and catchy game especially in this time, so those people with their own 'economist' mind can put into practice what they think could effect the stock market.

Thinking of making the game on the larger power level, that decisions you make would effect the stock market as a whole, where individuals could team up with others, and effect the economy as a whole, which would lead to a lot of possiblities, then creating governements on an economic level.

If you don't want to team up let me know, for this will be the game line of which I will make for entry of the contest :)

Sorry, I've already started on my gangster game :P

Your economics game sounds interesting though. I think I'm gonna do my contest entry alone, but I'd be interested in working with you on your economics game after the contest.

Well, here are some previews of the game so far.

I'll also explain a little more, as you might be confused about a gangster game with some real estate ideas thrown in :P

Everybody starts off as civilian, and can choose to be police or gangster (can be changed at any time). Police have their own Police HQ with distinct weapons/items, etc, and they need to catch the gangsters.

Anybody can start a gang, but a gang without any financial investment is gonna be a very small harmless gang. Good gangs will want to rent land to build a gang HQ, after which they can upgrade the member limit, buy more stuff, etc. They can also buy different buildings to store weapons, or to heal injured gang members, etc.

Civilians miss out on most of the action (can't be attacked, can't attack), but they can build buildings as well, rent land and sell it for a higher price, and perform other money-making actions.

There's a lot more ideas that I have, but I'm afraid I'll never finish it in time :P

Anyways, enjoy :)
I'd love to hear some thoughts on the idea. I'll try to get a live demo once the game is playable.

Small updates today:
Players can buy land now
Hospital is working (not instant heal, staying at a hospital increases your rate of recovery, and gangs can 'raid' hospitals to get easy kills ;) [under construction])
Bank is working (nothing different, typical RPG bank)
Added fame/reputation
Can donate to your gang

Sounds like things are going good, Zeggy. My only worry is that, with so many Gangsta games out there, you'll have a small chance.

Yep, that was a worry. Except that most of the gangster games use the same script, and all of them are boring. My game has a completely different style of gameplay, so I hope that helps :P
