New Entry 'Hero Game'
« on: October 27, 2008, 09:58:11 AM »
Obviously this is a working title because it has generic suckiness written all over it.  This will be more of a board game that will require multiple players to be playing simultaneously.  There will be a global rankings system to let people know how they are doing compared with the rest of the world.

Team: Me, my friend Bill, an artist that we can scrounge up.

I have been avoiding posting that I was going to enter because a new baby has been taking away from my game making time, but I think that is under control and I think I can get it done.

Ok, so instead of a technical update (though I am making progress) I will make a flavor post describing the background story for the game.  Included is a new working title!

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Dynamite:

The kingdom of Roshambeaux has lived in peace for years because of an uncanny balance of power between three merchant barons.

Percival Paper: A very academic and legalistic man, Percival made his merchant empire with the invention of a thin fibrous parchment that can be written on indelibly for the use of transferring information between individuals.  This parchment was called paper.  His powers of organization and vast libraries of information allows him to always maintain a position of dominance over Rocky, the quarry merchant.

Rocky: Hard work and determination has made Rocky the defacto rock quarry and stone supplier in the kingdom.  While not the brightest individual, sheer will and strength have never failed to keep him on the top of his field.  Percival has been a constant thorn in his side because however hard he works, he cannot keep up with the diligence Percival brings to bear.  Sly Scissors, on the other hand, has never been a problem for Rocky.  Brute strength has put an end to most of Sly's cunning schemes.

Sly Scissors:  A quick wit and a tongue as sharp as the blades his factory produces have worked well for Sly.  It also helped that Sly's father, Severous, invented a double bladed tool set on a hinge that can be used to cut paper.  Severous and Percival had been good friends, but Sly never liked the Paper baron.  Sly's sharp wit, cunning, and his love of practical jokes seem to elude and frustrate Percival and the law at every turn.

All was well in Roshambeaux with each baron keeping another in check.  The children of the kingdom had even come up with a game called Rock, Paper, Scissors as a way to determine things like who got to ride archer in the wagon.  Scissors cut Paper, Rock pounded Scissors, and Paper covered Rock.  Rocky always thought this last victory condition was stupid, but kids games often are.
Then one day a new baron showed up determined to make his fortune.

Max Dynamite:  A fiery man, Max considered controlled destruction to be a form of art.  With his invention of a tube of combustible powder, it was obvious that everything was going to change rapidly.

The Event:
The king of Roshambeaux decided to hold a party with the new baron as the guest of honor.  In an attempt to show off for the kingdom his great power, Max constructed an incredibly elaborate fireworks display.  News of this display reached the twitching ears of Sly and a cunning plan was hatched.  Sly thought that this new invention of dynamite would cut into his sale of blades as people would want to blow each other up instead of cutting each other up.  Before the fireworks could go off, Sly sneaked up to the display and cut the fuse.  Max, the new laughing stock of the kingdom was furious and declared Sly his mortal enemy.

Meanwhile waiting for the fireworks to start, Rocky's son Ignatious and Percival's son Peter got into a heated argument.  It went something like this.
Peter: "Why do you keep trying to beat me at this game.  Paper covers Rock and always will."
Ignatious: "What does that even mean?"
Peter: "Maybe if you were not a dumb rock you would know."
Ignatious: "Yeah, well maybe if..." CRUNCH!
While Peter flew back from Ignatious' fist, blood streaming from his nose.

Rocky told Percival he would not make Ignatious apologize and said Paper covers Rock is stupid so Peter got what was coming to him.

So battle lines were drawn.  Each baron took to them a soft alliance with one of the other barons.  Sly and Rocky teamed up because Sly was good against Percival and Rocky did not like what Dynamite could do to his quarry industry.  Percival and Max joined forces respecting each other's inventive spirit and shared hatred of the other two barons.

So they came together and settled their differences like men...   By playing a game crafted after their real life struggles which is what I present to you!

Here is a screen shot so people can see what I have been doing.  Most of the background is done.  I hope I can find a Symfony plugin to do a lounge because I will need a place for people to chat and join games.

Everyone have a good laugh at the programmer art.  I have not found an artist.  I am hoping to get one before submission...

Your graphic ability is about the same as mine.

 ;D

Try searching for free clip-art you can use, some of it is actually quite good and might fit the bill for you.

I wouldn't worry about having graphics. My team is going the full graphical route, and its a risky gamble. The more shit you show, the more things can go wrong. And believe you me, we've been spending the past week smashing SOOOOO many graphic bugs its retarded.

Ok, so mine still looks really bad but should be playable.  I will try to get some instructions up today or tomorrow.  That will probably be helpful.

In the mean time, you need at least two people to play the game.

Yeah, looks like I may have bitten off more than I could chew with this project.  Maybe if I had been able to finish it a week earlier I could have worked out the synchronization bugs.  Thanks for trying it out though!

I have been able to play it but I know things went wrong when I played it as well.  Still back to the grind stone.  The game seems to be getting more stable for me as I work on it.

Ok, I now finally have the help section up.  Maybe it will ... help?

Added a "synchronize game" button at the bottom of the game board.  Maybe if stuff is getting wacky that will help people out as well.  Totally shameful hack, but these are difficult times.

Haha, great! I'll try it out when I have the time, but can't say when that'll be :D.
