Final stage design
« on: July 06, 2009, 05:52:59 AM »
Hi all,

I thought this topic would be useful to some new game programmers like me.
I am about to finish my game first version in 2 weeks.(working on localhost)

So i wanted to know what are the final implements that are required for every game that is going to be released.
Some of them:

- Domain name and Host (I have them)
- Premium system (I have it)
- Buying credits for using premium (I don't have)
( I want to know how to interact my site with paypal and also what are other paypal type sites which users favour )
- Advertisement areas on site(I have)
(I want an example of sites which advertise ad banners by giving us money)

If Anymore please list them.

This is the forum which helped me in me coming out with my own game (right from scratch).
I hope it will also help me in this last piece

For papyal, you will need Paypal IPN. Google it, there are lots of tutorials.

If I remember correctly:

You need to enable your paypal account to use web payments standard or something, and setup your shop. However before you do it with your proper account, use Paypal Sandbox to test your IPN script. Its pretty much a paypal system where you have the ability to create your account and customers accounts, and simulate purchases.

I would post an example IPN script from a while back, but just realised, it was on my laptop, not my computer... My laptop that i reformatted on Friday.... :-[

Anyway hope that there helps

This is OT, but figured I'd mention it anyways. I've had stuff like this happen to me a LOT. However, my father (who is a network security admin) let me in on a little trick that I didn't even think of. He is a big fan of VMWare. Before he decomissions a machine, he creates a virtual machine backup of that machine! He's had enough errors like the quoted one above that he sees the value of archiving a copy of his machines just in case he didn't salvage something from it that he needed. So, he just boots into it from VMWare and recovers whatever it is that he needed.

Hope someone else finds the above useful! :)

In my opinion: pemium system and ads are NOT required as for an alpha stage. Though, it might be a good time introducing these during the alpha stage. I myself haven't ran a game yet, so I can't help you further I'm afraid :(.

Im pretty sure I will do this from now on, thanks :)

Jannesiera has a good point... If these are the only things that need to be completed, you could probably put your game on your server now set it all up and begin alpha... You could spend the next two weeks working on premium and ads, and add them to your game when you are done.

I just realised though, in your post it says some of them... If you dont mind telling us, what else do you need to complete?

- I recommend running the first half year without any premium options.
- Don't waste time on tutorial yet, you will need to redo many things anyway during alpha. Write it once you have everything stable and reasonably working.
- Reserve a lot of time during alpha stage for bug fixing, including forgotten must have features, server maintenance/changes/fixes.

Alpha definitely needs to be a fixer stage there are so many variables that we forget or features that are needed. Many times a we overlook needed things and during alpha its brought to our attention and we say ... wow thats simple why didn't i think of that. premium is def something to add later on you don't want your players paying for something that still has bugs and down time. Game balancing is another thing that is overlooked. depending on your game you may have to balance it out some specialy if you have any PvP what so ever
