Free vs restricted, actual effect
« on: May 20, 2011, 06:05:56 AM »
Hi,
when you play games that are free meaning classless etc. - do you -or your playerbase if you have any- experiment a lot or tend to choose the similar setting?

The question is because - free system without restrictions sounds like they can vary a lot, but I find myself sticking to the same paths and settings most of the time, while in restricted, class-based systems I experiment actually more, try other classes etc. ... ironic, but true

Some hybrid system might also be usable, having classes but being able to make them a bit different than usual, use some from other classes or multiclass system perhaps (for scifi 'd go for 1st, for fantasy 2nd)

Classes means mutaully exclusive choices.
Freeform means you chose the optimal set of choices.

Of course mutually exclusive choices will always provide more diversification than unrestricted selection :)

Althrough, freeform model can result in more low importance decisions than mutually exclusive model. That's probably where the myth of freeform giving more options comes from (because it actually gives more options, but these options are of low or no importance, so these options are kind of fake).
