Ideas
« on: July 04, 2010, 09:29:30 AM »
How do you come up with your ideas for your game?

Do you play a game and think " it needs this or that"?
Do you take inspiration from a mix of games, a little bit of this and little bit of that with a smattering of this?
Or do you just come up with it out of the blue?

I draw my ides from things that i DONT like about other games. Not always the "man, i could totally do that better!" mindset though, one of the things that bothers me to no end about games is that battles are just plain absurd (dealing millions of damage to people with tens of millions of HP...just doesnt make sense!!!) so i find things like that and ask myself how can it be done differently?

Mine projects usually come out of the blue but are influenced by other games that I've played. Usually older games that are no longer around or hard to find players for.
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Most of my ideas come actually from books, which is a little strange at times.  I think its probably better to say I draw inspiration from alot of different media, be it books, games, films, tv. It all ends up going the same way though, once I have an idea it gets written down in a black jotter, which then gets left on the bookcase for a few months, then picked up again.

Its amazing how bad some ideas look after not seeing them for months, but it does make the good ones stick out really well!

Ah, yes, I read that a while ago. Don't know where exactly though. It was exactly how you said it, with most ideas I don't have much patience to leave them on a shelf, or otherwise I do early elimination quite often.

Yeah, projects seem awesome while you're working on them, but when you see them with fresh eyes - often they aren't so great...
Projects: Pith Framework (at 0.5), CactusGUI (at 0.3)
