Game Balance
« on: October 15, 2008, 02:17:59 AM »
Greetings
I launched the open beta of my first browser rpg Armorica RPG at http://armoricarpg.novahost.org and I am kinda having issues with the game balance and specifically with the stats balance.
It seems in looking at the script that the game can have unlimited stats points, however  I am not exactly sure how to balance each stat, each job, promotion and such.
Anyone has got any ideas?siggestions?

Thanks

:o game balance.... this is the phrase i hate the most especially at the start if your 'lucky' enough to get someone buying like 10+ donator packs and just kicks the butt of everyone else.... now that one is annoying....

anyhow it is difficult......
often its best to start with a beta version..... test everything out with real players.... get game ideas.... etc etc etc and then code some changes.... an easy way to offset money is to add a new feature in thats pritty useless but costs alot :P then people with lots of cash buy it and then money is back on balance....

I wasn't actually talking about money balance.
I am talking about stats balance(IQ,labor, will and so forth)

money is a factor of stats etc and will honestly become more of a headache for you than stats..... stats you can just raise the cap or put things in which take -5 strength or whatever so they are constantly training.... but it both has the same principle

lewt, most of us are coding our own games, so the money cost of the changes is 0. It may take some extra hours, but they are kinda free.

raest... I believe he meant 'in-game' money. Not 'actual' money. ;)

True, but personally,I think that if I can figure how high should each stat should go,it would work.Except that I am having trouble with that.
My thinking is to leave the stats as unlimited, but then..........

dont leave stats unlimited.... everyone needs a goal so let them have a goal.... set it at say 1k.... then if thats reachable quick then change it to 10k

it doesnt really matter what it is as someone will allways max but depends how long it takes them to max it.....

1 or 2 months of hard playing is pritty cool and i mean hard playing
then for normal players they will want to donate to get more enrgy reffills and also maybe complete in 3 to 4 months each stat maxed

thats a cool timing

Oh... Maybe I just shut up then :P

I'm actually a fan of leaving everything open, ie no stat limits. I just do the raising of the stats a bit difficult and plan the stats so that they don't matter that much in general, strategy is the most important aspect in the game.

Diminishing returns on stat gains can do the trick

If there's any sort of PvP, the high end players will get the extra stat they need to get the upper hand, but normal players will find another stat to work on. Now I haven't played your game, but you can shift this around to suit your needs obviously.

Game balance is actually one of my favorite parts of game design.
