Has anyone tried using OpenID in their games?
« on: October 17, 2011, 06:18:42 AM »
On a whim I decided to try Ikariam today, and I noticed they have an option to "Login with OpenId".  After doing some research, I learned that this works like "Login with Facebook", except it's an open protocol and a variety of popular web services can be used as an OpenID.

This essentially means that as long as the user is logged on to the site that provides their openID, they can log onto yours with just a couple of clicks.  Keeping user passwords safe seems to be a big concern among some people here, but this provides an alternative to an on-site password system.

It sounds like it could be worth keeping an eye on.  Probably better than my old idea of using XMPP anyway.  Has anyone here tried it on their site?  Any good libraries you would recommend?

there are actually more ppl at Facebook than Open ID, actually no one would use this login or just a few. Implementing G+ or FB login would be more usefull than openID

Can't disagree with that. Gotta direct your resources where they're going to have the biggest impact. If you can get a library that does the heavy lifting for you even better.

HybridAuth and you have it all (FB, Twitter, OpenID).

Huh, I did a search for 'openid' but it came up empty.  I guess something must have been not working.

Keep in mind that OpenID includes everyone with an account in google, yahoo, myspace, aim, wordpress, livejournal, or flickr combined.  I'm curious where you learned that those networks have more people, but even if that's true, OpenID is not an insignificant demographic.  You also have no idea whether or not current trends will continue into the future.

Besides, encouraging the adoption of useful open standards is in the interest of the community.  Would any of you even consider requiring your users to register with an email address from a specific email provider?  Even if G+ is bigger than OpenID, which I'm not sure I believe, there's some value to not putting all your eggs in one basket.

i know, but see this from Player Sides. You have 2 Buttons on your Page "Login With OpenID" "Login with Facebook".. the user has myspace aim google account but do he know what the hell OpenID is? he just would say... :"YAY i know what facebook is, so ill use that button" . Actually i prefer Facebook to OpenID not beause of Quick Registration, youre able to put your game to the App List on Facebook. that give you some advertisments. thats the only Reason to use OAuth in my oppinion

Ok, granted, the technology is not widely known at present.  It seems to me that it will become better known if more people adopt it.

It seems like everyone uses Facebook now, but keep in mind that there's a country where hundreds of millions of internet users unable to access facebook without some serious effort.  Now that Facebook is starting to gain competition, it may only be a matter of time before it goes the way of MySpace.

Besides, facebook login and openID are by no means mutually exclusive.  Is OpenID really difficult enough to implement that it merits this level of cost-benefit analysis?  I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know.

i dont think that OpenID is difficult to implement. its just about, you waste about 8 hours for implementing it in your script and only 2-3 users would use it..

just expecting this.. i think there is a reason why big browsergames companys dont have OpenID login but Facebook or Twitter oAuth. if you have a game, implent it and tell us then how many users used OpenID

OpenID is useful only as long as you make the button dedicated "Connect via Google" or "Connect via Yahoo". Adding the raw OpenID link is kind of pointless (how many people here know by heart their OpenID url? :D). And even if you know/remember it, are you really that determined to type it by hand?)

Fair enough.  I still don't have a game, too many other projects get in the way.  When I do, I can try it out.

Yes, but I'll admit I'm not typical.  :D  I still use a command line interface when I can.

Maybe if OpenID became more mainstream, browser developers could add a feature to automate the process.
