Scalability and opening new servers?
« on: January 24, 2010, 06:49:43 AM »
Hi all,

wondering what's the exact point about opening new servers for a game?

I have some guess but not sure which is the main reason between those...

1) It's due to scalibility issues : New server with fresh database is needed due to load average going to high...
CONS : Load balancing should be affordable if you have so much players it means good money from it...

2) It's a trick to allow multiple accounts (one per server) and grab more money from players.
CONS : It's a bit messy about the community part of the game

3) It is needed because the primary game lose some interest when millions of players are level 99999... A fresh start allows a new fight from scratch
CONS : Doesn't that mean the game hasn't been rightly balanced?

4) ???

Perhaps that could looks like a newbie question... Hope someone will have an answer  ;D

It's due to scalability issues. Only big games have multiple servers this way.

Some games have different worlds too because of multiple gameplay options (for example a "speed" world is quite popular) but in theory this can be done with  on the same server (and database), though that might be messy and I don't recommend it.

There are games where you have one account and you can join one or multiple games (with a limited amount of players, for example smaller chess like games etc). These games are on the same server and share the same database. (it would be silly, costly and practically imposible to open a new server for each game a players starts xD).

- games that do not have rounds (everlasting) need plenty of new worlds so new players can start (who would want to start late in a game?)
- localization, it is good to create separate worlds for different languages
- new version, in some games if you make a new version that changes the core gameplay some old and hardcore player will go berzerk, in such case many owners just create a separate "old version" server. Everyone is happy (I never seen more than 2 versions made this way, always the old and the new one).
- scalability
