Active Desktop
« on: May 11, 2007, 01:05:56 PM »
Does anybody know what Active Desktop is?
I just remembered I used to use it a few years ago. It lets you embed a website onto your desktop, so you don't need to open up a browser to view a particular web page. You can put as many as you want right onto your desktop!

It seemed like a pretty cool feature, and I found it useful for a few things. I just searched it up again, and I finally found it, called Active Desktop :P

It's on Windows XP, but not on Vista. Unfortunately, I don't have it on my XP :( Apparently I need to reinstall IE4, then IE6, and select the right options.

Anybody else have any experience with this? What do you think of it?

It might be more useful nowadays with the way most people are always connected to the net. It was one of those "neat" features back in the day but because it was also the days of the modem it wasn't very helpful unless the page was locally hosted.

I believe it is not on Vista because the entire operating system is an "active system"
It was used in the past to apply dynamic content to your system, which some found dangerous at times.
I think most systems still have it, especially if you are using an animated background or screen saver, or putting dynamic or executable links on your desktop.
