Damn It!
« on: October 03, 2009, 03:19:45 PM »
Come online today to do a little coding, went on my site to find it was gone.. I was like WTF! I emailed my host ( hostgator ) They said they are having a few tech problems and it would be back up in the next 24 hours. I thought ok..

3 Days laters, Still nothing.. I used thier live chat to find out my filies have been lost and they are sorry, the best they can do is give me an old back up..

I don't have my game backed up, I have some of the scripts here and there so I'm gonna have to start again..

I loved how they said, sorry here is a back up from like 5 weeks ago.

I feel sorry for you. :(

But don't be disappointed because "Everything which happens is for greater good".

It never happened to me. I use to code everything in my localhost and upload it once a week to check if it's working on website or not.

5 weeks? Oh my... one would hope they would backup much more often
Painfully earned experience :/

Em... you code everything remotely, directly on FTP server?
Maybe it would be better to have files stored locally ... and for uploading you can use SmartFTP, it has a feature to synchronize files or folders

Feeling sorry too

Damn that does suck, been there and done that so many times it's not funny. Actually I'm pretty good at backups (normally), but last year I was developing on a jump drive and lost the damn jump drive!!!! 5-6 weeks of coding gone, trust me I feel your pain.

There is a bright spot though. You've already coded it once so the second time won't be so hard and a lot of times the second time around you've learned more and the next version of the code is actually better. I know it's just hollowed words right now but in time it'll get better ;)

I kept saying over the last week or so I need to re-design my DB, So messy and half of it is not needed.. Now this is a reason for doing so, I'm gonna keep it all nice and tidy. First I'm gonna start with the basics, login/register system then the needed pages such as message system ect ect.. Meh I learnt my lesson.. ;)

I did try local host once but it seemed I was doing double the work, some stuff worked on localhost which didn't work on my host so i had to redo it for it to work on both.

I never faced anything like this. my case is reverse

Use an smtp script, then al emails work on localhost  :P

I find it is alot more reliabe than mail() ayway. Mail() seems to take up to an hour on my host, while smtp almost insant.

http://phpmailer.worxware.com/ Best one Ive used. Easy to use and really quick.

But that sucks about the files being lost. But like others have said, now you know how t do things, and will only improve upon that knowledge.

Just wondering, how much had you completed?

I am the King of Dataloss. All shall bow down while in my domain. lol :P Seriously, though, I once backed all of my ex-wife's files up to a flash drive. Unfortunately, I forgot that I had left the flash drive inserted when I was fdisking the system... Yeah. I deleted the flash drive's partition. lol Oops!

I've lost so much data over the years, I could probably bury the United States Central Intelligence (or Intuitive if you believe Robin Williams) Agency in lost files so deep that it could re-stimulate the economy hiring workers to clean it all up! lol

So, I can say from experience, the best policy is to MAKE COPIES! Lots and lots of copies! Hide copies on flash disks under your bed, on your pet's collar, inside a waterproof baggie on the inside of your coffee mug. Because someday... you're going to need it! lol

All this crazy backup stress sounds like a lot of work and very prone to human error. Source control is so much simpler and carries a billion other advantages also.

I typically keep a local repository on an external drive for weekly/monthly commits, and a working repository on a company's site (say, unfuddle or codespaces) that I'm constantly updating. I've also used VCS for managing business documents, which works great so long as you helpfully set up your less technical users.

Maybe set a cron to email your stuff everyday or when ever you want it to?

I'm a big fan of using JungleDisk to back up my personal files (code's already on GitHub) because it has a nice GUI, works on Windows, OS X, and Linux, and encrypts data. I don't bother backing up music and such, so it's only a few gigs of data. At Amazon S3's prices, that works out to $3-$5 per month for pretty complete peace of mind.

Looks like my loss made a gain for the forums, haha got some good out of it.

But in a way I'm glad this happened now rather than later for the following reasons;

- I'm going to make sure my coding is more tidy and easier for later updates/bugs
- 100% works in the main browsers
- Have a better layout for files
- I'm also gonna come up with a proper DB. I wouldn't put it past me that I had over 15 tables that was not needed.
- And for the last one, LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!

EDIT: I'm also gonna look into the idea with the cron sending a copy to my email.

I agree with the comment above about using versioning. I just check out a copy in several places. :P Flash disk, CD/RW, email are all pretty common. Makes the back-up easier by running it as a check-out. lol And as stated above, versioning has its own rewards.

I've also been thinking of getting a couple of TB drives and mirroring them in a RAID setup (for hardware redundancy) and attaching them to my network. Then, having cron dump a nightly differential. :) Probably once a month I'd want to create a FULL backup and nuke all the previous incrementals.
