Does anyone else do nonweb programming?
« on: October 09, 2006, 04:12:43 PM »
I didn't see anywhere more relevant to stick this, so I put it in General Chat.

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone else here did programming that wasn't web based; C++, VB, etc.

I'm currently taking a visual basic class at my college, and I'm considering different languages for what I want to learn after VB.

Hmm... I tried programming games in C++, but it proved a little too hard for me XD
I'm hoping to be able to one day though... one day soon... C++ is pretty hard. I can make console text-based games, sure, but not 2d or 3d ones that are run in windows.

I haven't done anything game related with my programming yet, just application stuff.
Eventually I'll play around with it and try to make sort of game.
I know procedure based programming is better for games that object oriented though..

Zeggy, you don't use just C++ to make 2d/3d games anymore, the work has been done for you. When you want to make a 2d or 3d game you use the two more popular API's that do all the work for you. The 2 out there are Directx (which only works on windows operating systems) and OpenGL (which works on all operating systems, almost) Directx is vastly more popular since there is a lot more documentation and more people who work with it than OpenGL. Choose an API, install it and then get a book or read the documentation or find tutorial sites and within hours you will have loaded up images and can change the images with button presses do some quick effects, and within days you can learn to do some 3d work as well. Grab photoshop, truespace, visual studio and you can make a very simple game without sound within a week, now you just find free sound clips or buy some sound packages and its fully complete. I am not up to date with the current music programs that musicans use, I think most use some software from www.cakewalk.com and http://www.propellerheads.se

I had a c/c++ class in college.  We didn't get to do any graphics work though.  Best thing we go to do was a few sorting routines and a members database.   I found the language hard to understand at times specially when you have pointers to pointers, etc.  Lost me on those, lol!

My VB teacher used to teach C++ and she says they don't learn enough in a single class to do shit. I'm going to make a D&D character generation program for my semester project. :3

We had the same thing happen.  Our class was full of dumb shits so it slowed it down so much.  A small group of us went off and had like our own accelerated class and did ok.
