I would not be scared, the person who wrote the article looked at it very one sided way (webmaster's way). And there are plenty of reasons for a company (especially big one) to make something without financial reasons. Like... destroying the competition for example, which is Microsoft in that case
Also there is a clear benefit for Google to make the internet better. Even if they are not getting any money directly from this. They are so big that we can say that google=internet. Now they are trying to change people's behaviour regarding they way they use computers (entering OS segment, and all their OS are highly integrated with internet). If they succeed more people will inhabit internet and the whole internet business value will be higher. Win for Google, loss for Microsoft
