simple math problem
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:09:52 PM »
750 million photos were uploaded to facebook on new years alone.  If each picture is 10 MB, how many Terabytes of space is this?

.00001 Terabyte / photo * 75,000,000 = 750 terabytes in one day?

If we assume yearly uploads are only 20 times this one day amount.... thats 15,000 terabytes of storage space * safety factor required by facebook each year to keep up with storage demand.

Impressive.

except .... 10MB is hell of a picture... took a look at random {604 x 453 pixels @ 24 bits per pixel} image -> 37kB
and that's among the larger ones so I'd expect average be like 30-50 (and FB stores afaik 4 sizes, but the other ones will be even smaller, so like 30 + 8 + 4 +2)

still it'll surely be impressive

Perhaps you're correct.  Facebook may also run file compression of photos before storing.  But even at 1/10th of the file size, 1,500 Terabytes annually on a growing user base and increasing digital camera platform is pretty impressive.  And that wouldn't include RAID.

I wish I knew what type of drive they used so I could invest in their stock : )
