SMF vs PHPBB
« on: March 29, 2007, 09:01:37 PM »
Is there a reason to go with SMF instead of PHPBB? I've used PHPBB for years but for my new game I may try SMF out...

I kind of like SMF more than PHPBB, mostly on looks alone. SMF looks a lot more streamlined, PHPBB always seemed kind of unattractive for some reason (at least on its default scheme).

I prefer SMF as well. For one, PHPBB doesn't show the latest post on a board, just who posted last and a link to the topic.
Also, SMF has a package system that makes it really easy to install mods, but you might still want to edit a few files yourself.

I don't really like the templating system of SMF though. I forgot how the PHPBB styles system works since I stopped using PHPBB for a long time now.

The reason I switched to SMF, well I should say reason I`m switching to SMF (currently only have 1 of 3 converted thus far) is phpBB`s new user signup doesn`t do a very good job of blocking spam bots. BordelloBattles currently gets 20-30 new signup requests a day from these bots so we basically had to shut off the auto register and now have to hand approve all new signup requests which gets to be a burden very quickly.

phpBB`s module system is very difficult to deal with and to me, personally, there admin functions are very difficult to work with.. Most of the admin functions I commonly use came from installing a module that had better or the needed functionality that the base phpBB admin section should of had to begin with.

SMF.. There template, CSS system sucks BAD.

Support via there forums is almost non-existent when it comes to "real" help. Maybe with the release it`s gotten better but during rc2 and 3 I had major parts of my forum that simply would not work and got absolutely no help from the forums in trying to fix those problems.

The upload attachement, upload avatar thing is about as cumbersome as Ive had to deal with both from setting up on the admin section and as a user just trying to upload a pic and select it as my avatar.

With all that though SMF has some core features that stand well above phpBB2 and the beta phpBB3. It`s these features that keep going with SMF even when I`m pulling out all my hair trying to create a new layout or skin :)

vB is the best, but as far as free forums. SMF or MyBB are somewhat better than phpbb as far as features goes. But phpBB is a larger community overall.

smf is far better than any other forum

super customer support very good open source code

and the non free forum scripts, you know what the joke is, they are all based on free open source code, basicly alterd scripts

Well, I agree that SMF is very good, but I don't agree with the paid forum scripts.
I think a paid forum script is by far much better than the free forum scripts. They have a lot more features, they guarantee support (*cough* PHPBB *cough*), and a paid forum script also gives your website a little more 'status' :)

It's also worth noting that quite a lot of code in PHPBB (And I'd assume SMF as well) is plagued by something very common for open source projects: Really bad code. Oh, sure, it works. But the code is messy, often poorly documented, and takes a lot more work to work with than it really should..

PHPBB3 is, in my opinion, better than SMF.  The coding is very nice, they got rid of tables for the most part, and the frontend is very aesthetically pleasing.

I vote for SMF instead of PhpBB..
SMF seems to be more robust and flexible than phpBB.. and it is doing better and better each year..
But I should say that I hated SMF when it first came out.. But now it seems to be the best choice as Free Forum package..
But I've also heard and read that the next generation of PhpBB (v3) is expected to be great, but lets see ;)

The new phpBB3 RC5 is better than SMF in my opinion because it is more customizable. But I don't like the new post viewing style.. IPS ftw!

I use phpb for my current forum. I have yet to try SMF, but I think that SMF looks about/functions just as well as phpb.

I like the way PHPBB3 looks, it looks great. I don't like the SMF look that much, but it's much easier to use as an admin and regular user.
Still, I wouldn't switch to PHPBB3 just yet. I'll wait :)
