Time you have?
« on: October 13, 2009, 01:29:30 PM »
I'm just wondering, how much time do you get to code?

I myself don't get much, I go to college full time (4 days a week 9am till 4:30pm) and work weekends ( 10am till 5pm ) and go out with mates when I can.

I myself only get good coding time when I stay up all night and mess my next day up, i can't spend the odd 15 mins here and there coding I just refusw to. lmao

I have to have a few good solid hours to get some good coding done..

How about you? How do you fit your "coding life" around your life?

A friend of mine who I was chatting with right now just said to me, "time is my enemy".  However in my case, I think thats not really true.

I work 5 days a week, from 8-5 and can spend some time on development, but have the normal chores at home.

One day of the weekend goes off entertaining guests and the other day is for watching some football.

I think I can spend 8-10 hours in a week, at a minimum.. however being lazy, I do not spend that much time.

I also prefer a few solid hours for coding, but don't get that that much :P. Especially this year I'm getting more homework + tired in the evening. I try to do a bit when I can in the week, though most gets done in weekends and holidays.

The tricky part is that time flies when coding, so I find myself staying up late AGAIN because of it... (which I regret the next morning, or otherwise an angry mother will do :/)

I code ALL the time... at work! lol

Currently, we're behind on the project that is, basically, my ticket to a full-time hire at this company. So, needless to say, it's my #1 priority. ;)

So, I commonly work M-F 9-5. But, I've been working until 8PM Tue, Wed, and Thurs to try and reign this beast in a little. Hopefully we'll get even closer with the addition of a contracted developer as of last week.

When I'm not working, I'm spending time with my girlfriend or sleeping. On weekends, I have custody of my two kids so nothing much gets done on those days except spending time with them and cleaning up after them.

Recently, I've decided to take my lunch break at work to try and finish a novel. Mainly because I have an idea that I've told some people about for a few years now and I keep getting badgered to actually write it. lol I'm doing the project at my D&D Community blog (it's a fantasy novel so I figured that'd be a good place for it).
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I have school Monday to Friday, homework every one of those nights, and karate most of those nights.

I usually spend most of Friday aternoon coding, from around 4:30 til 10, if I had to average it.

Recently, Ive probably ben spending 8 hours coding each Saturday, and probably 5 on Sundays....

So approximately 18-19 hours a week, but alot of that time is spent giving support, rather than coding what I want to....

I almost never plan on when to code, I just know which "modules" of game I want to make are missing and which "module" I should do next.
So when I have free time and motivation to code then I do it.
Sometimes when I have some new idea and people bugging me every day what stage is that game dev on (like it was on 2 games :) ) I can code for hours and create really big parts of future game.

If I go in the past ... I was most motivated when I have 2,3 guys helping me with all idea/economy aspects of the game, so I coded much and fast not to mention I was working from 6AM - 3 (or 4) PM that time :)

I think this has been my case too. I like to have another person who is also involved in coding. This helps me discuss ideas and get through various other stuff that comes along during the course of making a game.

My only 2 games (non-PBBG) were developed by working with another person.
