Nope...
still don't really understand what it's about, when I look at someone's profile I see a list of messages that has no connection to each other and make no sense too me...

Lol. You can use it for many things actually. Sharing resources and links, letting people know what you're doing or just following other people to know what they're up to.

I manly follow family members (read: my dad) and game developers, basically just people I'm interested in. I'm following some one from Teheran which provides small updates on the situation there. That way I hear stories I wouldn't hear otherwise, and I don't even have to go look for it.

How it works? You can "follow" users. Any messages they post will come in your list. I suggest downloading "twhirl" or "tweetdeck" so you get your messages directly on your desktop.
Other users will follow you (your "followers") and any messages you type they will see.

Can that explain a bit more? The best way to understand is to sign up though ;).

if you take facebook...

and get rid of all the poking, the notes, the pictures, and the events...
the profiles, the networks, the friends, the ability to stalk people, the ability contact old friends...the poking
the complicated privacy settings, the notifications about everyone and their mom (literally)......the poking
the mafia wars, the farmtown, the vampire wars, the quizzes, the polls, the ads that probe your account for information about to...........oh and the god forsaken POKING!!!!

thats twitter....and much like Nox, i just dont understand...lol

I guess the signing up would explain best... I still don't get it as I mainly don't understand...I was so bold to look at your profile, but when I read those messages it's like every one of them is about something totaly different, making mess in my head. Maybe it's necessary to be logged in to view it properly or only the person can read it or I don't know

Sagefire
Yeah:)
I joined facebook so I have an info on my friends from high school and know about events they create so I can participate, but beside that it's terrible all those quizzes etc.

I'm also reluctant to join these as ...you know...just for the mania that is around that
Still have no blog, so I guess I'm not in ...though I have nothing against a valuable blogs (like a blog of person skilled in PHP etc.) and visited often many of them, but sometimes I would not even label them as blogs but more as "page about PHP", though their header says otherwise ... but the feeling still prevails in me

I don't think the little messages should be connected, it's just what you do at that time. Maybe now I post that I'm browsing a little bit and in an hour I'll post that I'm having yummy breakfast with eggs. Then later on I will post a link to a funny comic online or send my frustrations about my corrupt government into the world? Or is it something else you mean?

Or perhaps I'm just a terrible twitterer (or something) ;).

Twitter is also a good way to let your users know quick updates about your game. This can be helpful as twitter is made for mobile devices and accessible outside of the game's server.

...twitter is made for mobile devices...

true, but with today's mobile devices you can do anythign from sending email, to paying bills. Some phones can EASILY handle more than older computers can.

I dont use twitter or follow anyone who does use it so i cant speak as an expert, but to me twitter just seems a social networking site without all the useful stuff. I will say though that it has 2 good points from my perspective. 1) anyone can see them without needing to make an account somewhere which for the purpose of updating people about something like you mentioned is pretty useful. and 2) if you dont want to deal with all the useful (and useless crap) that is on a networking site, you dont have to.

more and more i see why it coudl be useful to some people, but i cant get over the fact that some people LIVE on the internet (in places like twitter), not in the sense that they spend all their time there, but that they literally post every little detail of their live no matter how insignificant it might be to the rest of the world, i mean i dont see how too many people could care that Joe Smith just got a new pair of shoes from payless and then 10 minutes later he went for a walk... I guess its people like that who make me wonder what the point of twitter is.

What I think is great about twitter is that you can use it the way you like it. If Joe Smith wants to live on the internet, that's his business, I'm just not going to follow him ;). I don't see twitter as a social networking site, but more as a place to spread information. And even more to get information!

Some one posted this video about twitter, it's a little bit slow but very interesting:

Twitter was recently hacked and a trove of internal documents stolen and leaked to techcrunch. Twitter describes itself as the pulse of the planet and appears to devote a lot of strategic thought to their role in the whole social media landscape.

If you want to see what kinds of questions, insights, and challenges a big web 2.0 company has you'll probably find the contents of the documents quite an interesting read.

So I created myself an account for my game (sanctum_bbg) and just to be sure for myself (noxart)

I still don't exactly understand the personal use, but according to "Tell us what you’re doing in the box above" I think it's pretty good for games for those who don't like to spend a lot of time writing to blog (although it might be viable in the final stages of developement) but like to inform and record their progress

Edit - adding links:
http://twitter.com/Sanctum_bbg
http://twitter.com/NoxArt (but I currently don't plan to post there)

I like more the style of "Home" section (that one with avatar at each post) than the one on these pages though

Oh i can understand the private use....

as a tweeter your keepeing 'all your friends' in the know about what your thinking about and doing and when you last went to the toilet and such.....also if you have lots of followers its like an affirmation that you really are an 'interesting' person.

as a follower there is an air of the (damn i forgot the word...its not pervert, but means someone who is getting some fun/excitment from watching someone elses private sphere) about it. You get to see what someone's been up to or doing or thinking about...,

However that doesnt mean I would use it as such, or would even recomend it as such. In terms of private information on the net, the public still has a lot to learn...and could take a leaf from politicians....once youve said something in public you cant take it back......it might come back to bite you years later.

But twitter as an opt in distribution channel its fantastic. No need to worry any more about maintaining distribution lists.

If you have any sort of plan to add some sort of viral marketing layer to your game, or are looking for a way for players to let other interested parties know  about ingame events then you should include twitter in that.

Yeah twitter looks like it could be pretty cool, I've been doing some work on my terrain rendering system, and currently I don't feel its worth the time to write a full blog post, but adding some random twitter comments as I'm going along makes a ton of sense.
I've added a twitter feed to the side panel on my blog, so people can see what I'm doing in-between blog posts, which is pretty cool I think, now to write something worthy of coverage :)

I use it to post tips and information for my game's users. I also have a twitsig so that my latest post is shown in my signature on the game's forums.
