Way of thinking
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:41:39 PM »
Heya guys

I had a thrilling discussion with my gf with the result of me thinking differently than her. This really seems weird to me: She mostly (or almost exclusively) thinks in words, e.g. if she thinks a film is funny she's thinking "This film is funny" while I rather experience a "funny feeling"/a funny emotion
...and this goes for almost all situations! If I'm talking silly she's thinking a sentence like "shut up" and I.. well I just feel a feeling of annoyance.
How do you think? Are there any scientific researches about that? And are there even more ways of thinking?

Sorry for the weird topic
Best

Wow, weird, well... I rather tend to think in words/sentences... sometimes in czech, sometimes in english :)
Is she introvert or extrovert? I'm rather introvert and often talking to myself, so maybe it's related... then there's a worse possibility that I'm actually girl, but let's not go this way :)

But in case of memory I had it the other way round... I rather remember how I felt then what they said, not always but...

anyway - lol
and nice weird topic ;)

I tend to think in complete sentences. And, for the record, I'm also an introvert. I think Nox might be onto something with the corollary. lol :P

I don't know. When I try to think how I think, I only get the sentence "I try to think" in my head, but it doesn't really feel like proof... Because I'm thinking of the sentence and nothing else. And when I try to think about something else (for example: a duck) I get an image of that object in my head (I get an image of a duck, not the word, in my head). But I still think that doesn't proof anything.

When I think about you funny movie example I think I'd rather get the funny-feeling than the sentence "that movie is funny". I'm quite sure about that since I saw a little bit of the Holy Grail today and a few sketches from Monty Python a few days ago.

I'm rather extrovert so Nox might really have a point there...

How do you know if you think in words, or if the only way to 'describe' your thoughts is in words?

Can you talk to yourself in your head? Do you find yourself sitting there and, without moving your lips you "hear" the words:

"Ok, I've sat here thinking over this little problem for an hour. WHERE is the answer?"

Or, do you just feel frustrated without "hearing" any accompanying narration in your head?

Hmm interesting, tbh in this case it's rather a mixture for me: I don't think about words, and I have this feeling, still I'm thinking about the situation and the "answer" to it. But not really in words :) (exception: somone said something wrong, or alike) I know it's difficult to imagine...
Lol I thought about that the whole day ^^ I was so eager to find out how exactly I think, and when I think in words. But now I kinda believe that there's no "general rule" or alike.. dunno...

Great that so many answered :))

I'm always talking to myself, but at the same time I can also feel very intense emotions.

I think i tend to think on several levels.

I have an almost constant running conversation with my self....( thats normal right? ) ....My inner voice is often providing a corroborating viewpoint, but also frequently plays devils advocate, to the point where i often find myself engaged in internal arguments...( ok now im starting to sound a bit weird )...my inner voice often takes a much more extreme position than what i present to the external world. (I wonder if this represents a supressed desire to be a bit more extreme)

At another level i have my emotional thoughts/feelings. Usually these are supressed or held in check by my inner voice, but sometimes if they are too strong then they take control and my inner voice is switched off and i just react on an emotional level...It seems my kids are trying to develope some sort of black belt mastery in identify when im close to loosing the plot...But inanimate objects ....like the roller blinds i was trying to repair on the weekend also seem to be able to push me over the edge.

There is a third state for me though....Its when im engaged in a problem, working on some code, or playing a game....the so called Flow state....when im like that the inner voice has also shutup...that or we are, for a while at least, one with oursleves.

What i find interesting about people, is that so many people cannot make an honest and accurate appraisal of themselves....wether of their abilities or their personality. Or that so many people just dont seem to be able to be happy with where they are in their lives.

...Yep i sound like a class A looney now....shut up you....but you do this is a It forum not some namby pamby new age ....yeah yeah i Know but this is the new mileenium blokes are sposed to talk about their feelings...oh shutup...you tooo.....um...you think anyones still reading....oh god i hope not!

:o Wow, you explained that so well! For me it's the same for most of what you described. Esspecialy the "conversation with myself" and the "flow state". I recognise myself in parts of the "emotional thoughts/feelings" but it's not so acurate as with the other states of mind. but really, wow...  :o

I'm really amazed how acurate your description is for me!

lol Same here... except my "inner voice" is actually a fully-realized person (I have a visual memory... I can "see" things in my head such as textbooks that I've read and such) So it's not that my inner voice is really "silent" when I'm in a flow state. I'm almost ALWAYS listening to music when I work so he's usually just jamming out to whatever's going on.

I've always found it odd that most people claim that heavy music interrupts their thought process. It actually helps mine. Maybe because my inner voice is a metal-head and that's the only way he shuts up? lol

Oh, and as a point of fact there are many studies linking genius with insanity. Also, there's further links that point towards intelligence as a common factor in patients suffering from dimentia during old age.

You know... just to make us all worry about our health. ;)

Wow, compared to Scion's selfconversation my mind is practically empty. E.g. when I work - I work. No thoughts, no conversation, no inner voice, I just sit there, create the code, imagine how it would work, see a mistake and "store" it somewhere in my mind (if not instantly fixable), and just carry on. And I'm so into it that there's barely space for any other brain activity, e.g. if there's music playing I propably won't notice it for a long time ^^
Very interesting to read all your point of views!

This thread becomes more and more interesting :)

I also often tend to have a inner conversation, except of focusing on some work. Any my other self is actually pretty unpleasant, judging and criticizing me most of the time :) often not really with a nice language, despite I myself am polite person...meh, but I have to live with him, sometimes he can be just argued with

It's funny also that I very often can't remember if I said something out loud or if I just thought that...
