Backup?
« on: March 21, 2007, 02:06:03 PM »
Hi

Since I started my new game I'm wondering how often I should back up my db. Is daily enough? Every 2 days?

How often do you make a backup, or are you not backing up anything?

I use to do it every 4 hours.. Used a PERL script I created then ran a cron job every 4 hours. Script would save the last 10 backups. As the games have grown and more people started playing them (IE db go a LOT bigger) I'm now down to once a day...

With a new game I would back up more often.. Once the game is online for a while, with no exploits, logic errors found then I would look at increasing the time of the backup cycle.. Start at 4 hours, go to 8, then 12 etc. With a new game you have no idea what may or maynot happen. Having a very recent backup helps keep the player's at bay if something were to go wrong and you only lose say 4 hours of data ;)

Right now I'm doing it manually, since I don't exactly know how to do it otherwise --;

Well, maybe Google can help me out :)

It all depends on how much your game changes in a day. If there's a lot of changes in a day, and new members & content, then I'd backup everyday. Make a script that'll do the backups for you.

I personally back everything up if I make any changes. >.> Although it is at times troublesome, it does help me to backtrack if something goes wrong.

backup is a tricky business... I used to use a script I had on my server to backup my DB... my game main tick is every hour so I was backing up every hour... the resource got to high so I started to use http://www.mysqlbackedup.com .. they backup my game remotely now, every hour.. i had to email them to ask them to do it every hour... they didnt charge me extra though... i can download all my backups from inside my account page.. never looked back...

I use that. It's free and you can choose which tables to back up + it can also back them all up if required. All you need to do is edit a few settings in one of the files and set it to run via a cron.

Very cool as it also emails you them so you can download onto your computer.
