It was stated that some sites may be able to make the cut due to their nature, but Mike is correct when he states that it would change the nature of the contest.

If you really feel like your site deserves to make the cut, drop me a PM and I'll take a look at it. Some people will have an edge for having developed a base framework already or things of that nature, so, it seems fair to include a few entries as long as they're not exceptionally polished designs from day 1 of the contest. However, these sites must not exist online prior to the beginning of the contest. If you have a game online, that means you've had a chance to accept user feedback to fine-tune your entry which is, at least in my opinion, cheating.

I think I'd like to enter.  If the odds aren't too against a person who is actually starting from scratch with only experience to help them get started that is.. lol

(channel probably will be deserted most of the time)

We are starting on Monday (your timezone)! Wake up early :D

How should the competition be named? "Unofficial" sounds a bit lame. Maybe something like "Fun gamemaking competition"? Althrough it should be not too lenghty since I would have to fit it into crests for winners and participants.

This is funny, just when i'm done with all projects for school this competition starts. So i probably have some time left to program a game. So i'm in! Have some idea for a simple and small but unique game wich has been wandering in my head for some time. Going try keep it simple now, because can't finish most of games because i want to much.

And what about 'PBBG Making Competition' for name?

I'm new to this site, but I'd like to enter. I don't have a clue yet what type of game I'll make (lots of ideas). Here's what I'm starting with, let me know if that's ok:

* Basic site framework (database module, page template, etc.)
* Registration / Login system
* Forums / Private message module
* Possibly a domain (I have a few registered...it depends on what idea I settle on if it will work)

However, all game elements will be created from scratch.

Can we get "official" benediction and call it the 2010 bbgamezone competition? The only reason we've called it "unofficial" is because the admins--Codestryke et al-- aren't organizing it themselves, but since the whole community is participating, I think it is, in a way, official.

I agree with Nano :). I can't enter myself due to time restrictions and a lot of work but I wish all the best to all participants!

i suggest to not implement forums, email, authentication etc (that are not interesting for the competition), but only the core elements of the game.

Sure, we don't see any reason why not. Like you said, it's the BBGZ community that's organizing and participating in it. Can't be much more "official" than that. lol

As stated in rules, you can use all source codes you ever made, without restrictions. You can use previously made game elements as well or scrap your old/unfinished game for parts and use them to build a new one.

You are encouraged to use your previously existing source codes.

It is the opposite in this competition. You are encouraged to include everything you ever made if possible. This way people will be encouraged to make their login/register/chat script once and then to use it without rewriting it each time. One of the concepts of this competition rules was that the person who has build a collection of scripts has an advantage. This way at least some people might stop merely reading the forum and instead write some basic scripts so they can use them in the next competition, even if they do not have a clue what kind of game they will be making :)

What about games that are in progress? I've had a game I've been working on since late december and is starting to get to the beta stages, but hasn't been released yet - would that be a candidate, or not?
You could organize a separate competition for "games that are less than 6 months old".

OK, so this is an official competition now :)
But if anyone suggest to do it democtatic way he/she/it will be burned alive (there were attempts to make it via community discussion last time and there was no consensus for a whole year 2009!) All rules are interpreted solely by JGadrow, not by voting. It might be not to everyones liking but it is fast and efficient.

Can we get a ruling on outsourcing?

I'm not good at graphic design. I plan to post on 99designs.com to get a logo made, maybe also some layout/graphics (will decide that later). I can hack up my own placeholder art, but I'd really prefer to have something nice.

It's not been stated that the work must be a result of 1 individual or a team of individuals. Personally, I don't think it makes a difference and seeing as how it is being encouraged to leverage available resources, I think outsourcing layout and graphics seems proper enough.

It's so awesome to watch the progress of the participants! :D

I have a request for every one participating though. Would you mind contributing some of your useful code snippets to http://pbbgsnippets.com/ ? We're trying to encourage the community to share and create better games. So we'd really appreciate it if you would be willing to do that :).

Crud, I wanted to enter a contest this year and I was really excited to enter a game for this one, but I've gotten a huge surge in work for classes so I can't participate. However, if there will another one later this year, I will plan ahead for it.
I'm not slacking off. My code's compiling.

I'm also throwing my hat in - perhaps twice. The first game is educational, and the second is content-driven - but I haven't quite gotten confirmation on the content-driven one yet. I'll post in the progress thread once my collaborator and I start on the first game, and again when the second one gets started.

Hey everyone.

A friend of mine (In fact, the poster above me, Daedeloth) linked me here after I showed him a demo of a game I just started on.

I think this competition is a really great idea, and I will very likely be submitting an entry myself.

Hopefully new comers are just as welcome as the regulars.

The contest is for anyone meeting the requirements. :) So, if you wish to enter, simply state that you wish to enter. However, as the game you mentioned in your above post is obviously in current development, it does not qualify for this contest so you will need another game concept to enter.

The entire game took me just yesterday evening to develop, art and all.

My understanding was this contest started quite some time ago?

Edit: Just to be more specific:

The original game idea came to me on the 23rd, I whipped together some art for it, and coded the current demo in an evening. Although I did not know of the contest at the time, does that fall within the restrictions of the contest?

Oh, gotcha. ;) I had thought you meant you were showing a playable demo. The contest has been 1 week running at this time so there are 3 weeks remaining. So, since you began during the contest period, you would certainly be a candidate. I apologize for the confusion.
