Unfortunately, looks like I have to withdraw Loot from the competition at this point. :(

Loot is going to be developed, eventually, but time and circumstances are preventing much progress now.

Good luck to the rest of you! I look forward to some play-testing and to your successful game ideas.

Project spacegame (working title)

Process in the last days:
I've been playing with Actionscript 3 a lot the last few days. Given that I have never made a project in Flash before, I'd say I'm doing fairly well.

- Managed to make a rudimentary XHTML parser to manage the dialogs for the game. It only handles paragraphs, divs, input fields and buttons at the moment, but that's all I need for now really.
- Thought a bit about initial gameplay. Since there aren't that many days left I'm going to focus on the main game ideas. Later on I'll expand to more fancy gameplay elements
- Managed to some kind of scrolling box. Yes, it's basic, but I'm very very new to Flash ;)

I've also decided not to handle the login part in Flash. I will use my browser-games-hub.org library, basically forcing players to login using OpenID. This should save me a days work figuring out how to handle the login part.

There's not much time left, but since my Flash client is almost finished (not nice to look at, but practically working) I have faith that I'll be able to finish *something* within the timespan.

I've moved the work-in-progress server to
http://www.u-235.be/

Good night!
Thijs.

Qorporate Quest

Spent some time the last week getting this up to a playable beta. Not sure if it'll get much further before the deadline, but I'm happy to be able to enter something!

Fluff:
Qorporate Quest is the website for a major corporation, <Company Name>, that specializes in ruining your life. They take your time, they take your life, and worst of all they steal your desire to live. From the demeaning coworkers who eat your lunch and give you a measly energy bar to the CEO who requires you to come in on the weekends to do his personal chores, nothing about this job is what you wanted from life.

But, you're stuck, all you can do is sit back, and enjoy the ride.Thankfully it doesn't take much thinking, and its hard for you to screw it up.

The non-fluff:
A friend suggested I create a web-based Progress Quest, and having never heard of Progress Quest I said sure. After checking it out, I felt I had to. So this is my homage to Progress Quest, set in a corporate world.

Its still a rough beta, playable, but there's probably typos and busted links around. Feel free to poke me about them in the forums.

Otherwise, sit back, and enjoy the game! Perfect to leave running in the background as you deal with your real life job.

To score myself:
Fun: 3
Originality: 0
Interface: 5
Visual: 1
Laughter: 7

Comipics @comipics

I've finally exited Facebook Hell - which is where the incomplete/oudated/vague docs and lack of debugging insight lead to fundamental misunderstandings and non-functioning (or, worse, intermittently-functioning) code - and started making steady progress on Comipics.

I've got Facebook photos appearing in comics properly masked, and have enough of Facebook's JS API working to start browsing albums/photos so you can pick which goes into each frame of the comic. FB was a lot harder to get started with than I expected so I've totally blown my schedule (and getting sick hasn't helped), but I think I'll still have the core done by deadline, I can just punt on all the premium features until after the contest.

Reminder

Mostly I wanted to post to remind folks that all the cool kids are hanging out in #competition on irc.gamesurge.net, we've got 7 people and have been actively chatting for the last day or two. Hit mibbit to drop in easily.

DEMONS is online!
I haven't found a time to make a front page, message system, item shops but the game is playable and online.

I'm afraid "Spacegame" will have to withdraw from the competition. The actionscript part of the project has proven to be way too much for poor little me to finish in time.

However, I'm happy with what I *have* achieved. I hardly knew any actionscript when I started, so it has been a pretty good experience.

The 3D part of the project has proven to be a little troublesome. When pushing a lot of objects to the stage the rendering becomes awefully slow. This needs a lot of optimization before it will be usable for a bigger game.

I'm very happy about my XHTML parser in actionscript. While it's not much to look at (yet), it does function as expected. This allows me to develop the actual game without touching the actionscript.

I'll surely continue working on this project, but I'm fairly sure I won't have anything playable by the end of tomorrow.

Current state of the game:

Unless a miracle happens I will withdraw from the competition since I wasn't able to decide what game it will be and it is a very bad sign 1 day before deadline :D

Comipics - @comipics

Comipics is definitely not making the deadline. Anyone who's looked at the updates on Twitter has seen that it's only the last couple days I've added the ability to place and pan photos - I still have a couple major features: inviting people to write scripts, allowing those people to add their captions to the comic, and then the contests that comics are submitted to. I'm also leaving for a trip in about three hours, so there's no way I can slap those together before the deadline arrives. Argh.

So, what happened? Well, I lost a week to procrastination and another to being sick, which didn't really help anything. But the biggest problem was that I took on too much technology risk, I shouldn't have started using Facebook in a one-month contests, or I should've re-evaluated and bailed on it after I lost the first couple hours fighting it. I really wanted to learn it and use it on this project and the contest was an great exuse to get started, but I'd probably have the basic gameplay now if I hadn't insisted on getting FB working.

I'm a bit disappointed with not finishing, but I've built the great start of what I hope will be a great game and I'm going to keep working on it. I'll keep posting updates to Twitter and I'll post an annoucement here in the forums when I have a beta up. I have a saying I'm keeping in mind: "A little present-tense success forgives a lot of past-tense failure."

It's been a lot of fun working on my game during this contest, especially all the activity in #competition. And my thanks to Chris and JGadrow running the contest - I can't wait to see who wins.

Qorporate Quest

Well, its definitely playable, and even though I didn't implement everything I wanted to, nor do I think there's any real viability as a long time game, I'm quite happy to be submitting an entry. Please feel free to check it out and have a laugh. With me or at me, either way it was a fun little project that I may flesh out more in the future.

Time? 11:30.... turned in with 30 minutes to spare!

So yeah. Dream Tavern got pretty close. But it's not making the deadline.

Nevertheless I'm really thrilled with how far it got. I'm going to release it, but it just needs an extra week or two. The competition has been an enormous motivation and Dream Tavern would not exist without it. I've had a lot of fun this month, it's been great. Good luck to the contestants, I'm going to be trying out everyone's entries.

Good luck to all those who are still in.

There is still a tiny bit of time left (depending on your time zone) as stated in the rules the competition is from 2010.01.18 to 2010.02.18, so you have time till 23:59:59 on your time zone to finish things.

Final entries (if your game is missing, post now):

Wicked Dead http://www.fusionbroz.com/wickeddead (Hypemaster)
Demons  http://demon.megabyet.net (raestlyn)
ModularGaming  http://copy112.com/modulargaming (copy112)
Duel Arena http://www.duelarena.com (Chris)

Probably dropped out:

If the deadline was 0:01 on the 18th, I missed it - unfortunately, deploying too late (and an unresolved import error on the server) has sort of thrown a wrench into the gears. I'm hoping to get Regex Monk deployed by midnight, assuming I can get this error fixed.

As my personal recommendation, the contest should not end for any participant until 00:00:00 HAST (GMT - 10). So, when it's Friday in Hawaii, the contest is over.

That way, there's a singular time for all participants as there's really no way to verify each entrant's time zone. ;)

Since judges are OK with it then any participant can end at Hawaiian time as stated above or 2010.02.18 at 23:59:59 in their local timezone.

Sorry for the confusion with the dates, next time we will specify it more clearly in the rules. Anyway, I think in case of any doubts participants should choose the date interpretation they prefer since some could have planned it wrongly due to not clear rules enough rather than a failure to meet the deadline.

<b>Dice Battle Cars / Endless Dungeon</b>

Sorry, never got back here to update. I didn't get this game completed. A major work project came up that consumed my spare time and when it was complete I determined to put Dice Battle Cars on hold and go with another game project: Endless Dungeon - a fantasy RPG using entirely procedurally generated content using a fairly complex problem->goal generation routine. This I almost completed in time, but I still have a bit to finish up to make it playable. Even then I will need to add a substantial amount of content bits into the generation engine in order to make it interesting. I'll probably finish this up within the next few weeks and post a playable beta.

Anyway, thanks for the chance to compete in this competition and I'm sorry I was unable to finish.

Are you sure you want to withdraw? The game does not have to be completed, it only needs to be playable. I do not think anyone have 100% completed game (and it would be probably impossible within that timescale).
