Well, the Something Awful forums have about that kind of userload, and they have a hosting cost of about $20,000 a month. Oof

As for forum I would say 100-200GB bandwidth per month and disc space below 1GB. Games up to 300-500MB of discspace, as for bandwidth 20-600GB/month.  But I could be completely wrong :D

Anyway, why do you ask? Those sites either make enough money to pay the bills or are small enough to be on shared host. In addition what matters is CPU utilisation, since you will always have redundant discspace in this kind of sites.

It depends on the size, and popularity. Like for my games, since they aren't popular I can stick to small/free hosts. But for a forum or a large game...1-3GB should be ok. As for bandwaith...Usually 10GB I suppose, per month. Although if you can get more bandwith/space that's always a good thing.

most hosting plans today give you abundance of resources in terms of disk space and bandwidth with a relatively low price. However, they are quite strict on CPU/RAM utilisation. Most forums or game script consume lots of these resources thus forcing them into using their own dedicated server.

You could always start a forum/game site on a shared hosting or even a free one and eventually as your site population grows and start generating some revenue, you could always switch to a better hosting plan such as VPS or Dedicated Server
