Hobo-no-more!
« on: August 21, 2010, 12:21:11 AM »
Well, I finally went and signed up for a dedicated server. I figured with one of my clients guaranteeing me $150 / month, I could afford to spend $80 of that to move some of my stuff onto a nice, cozy server. After many, many hours I now have moved my issue tracker (and installed all the plugins that I want), setup my default SVN parent path, and created a page to entertain whomever happens to visit my domain.

I've still got tons to do for setting up this beast, but at least I'm a step closer to a professional image now. lol

Yeah, the plan is to make this site a professional-quality site. I'm tired of always telling interviewers, "I didn't do the design for these sites and in no way vouch for their standards compliance."

I figured if I have my own server and website (and, honestly, I've gotten quite a few raised eyebrows when I call myself a web developer and I don't have a website) then I can make it the way that I want to and really show that I can make a nice, clean site meeting today's standards.

But, I decided against making this a site for my company. Partly because I want to change the company name (it's far too long right now) and partly because I think this should be my site first, and a professional portfolio second.

Why a dedicated server instead of a VPS? You could cut your costs by 75% and probably not miss the extra capacity you're not using (or at least just spin that up if and when you actually need it).

I just thought it was a better deal. I had considered the VPS first (I recently moved a friend of mine onto one) but, I dunno. I just like knowing that there's an actual, physical, piece of hardware dedicated to my use. :) With a VPS, you're still sharing the actual hardware components with other users even if it's not quite as bad as when you're using shared hosting, it's still there.

Well, you are still sharing the datacenter... Haven't thought about renting a small concrete building with emergency power generator, network connection, fire supression system and stuff?

That's true. But I hardly see how that relates. By sharing physical hardware, there is still a performance overhead. Sharing the same electricity / physical location does not.

And, seriously, if I had a beefy enough connection to handle traffic, I'd build the hardware myself. But, if wishes were wings, pigs would fly. ;)
