I'm tired of "insert genre here" *Top Ten list
« on: February 20, 2009, 09:32:52 AM »
I've noticed a trend in Browser Based games. Folks seem to be in it to make money the easiest way. To do so they blatently copy off other games. Here are some of the game types and genre's I am tired of seeing. Post yours as well so maybe we can start preventing these horrible copies from coming to life.

10. Village sims/Tribal sims
9. Space trading/piracy/combat sims
8. Legend of the Green Dragons rip-offs
7. The sudden flux of TCG
6. Pet games
5. Recruitment games (i.e recruiting gets you skill points/money/exp )
4. Pimp/hobo war games
3. Street Racing games
2. Fantasy management sports games.

and my number one most hated to see Genre.

1.MAFIA games.

I swear to god, if I see another Mafia game, someone is going to die.

Yeah I agree that there are a lot of very similar games especially mafia and pimp games.  There are enough easily attainable game scripts for mafia games now that many of the games are based off of the same original scripts with little to no modification which makes them basically the same.  There tend to be greater differences in the civilization, space, and other games.

^
generalization - I realize that there are original mafia and exact script copies in other games, but i see that most in mafia games

I think with any genre if you write your own code and come with some unique ideas you can make a great game, but if you just try to copy another game as closely as you can your just being a leech.

Would a hitman game come under the mafia topic?

You are right.
Many new ones have been trying too hard to sell their cards and have an online community...

Actually they are CCGs, not TCGs. In TCG you actually can trade the cards, but in these online game you hardly are able to, so they are Collectible Card Games.

Are you sure I didn't mean TCG.....Warstorm,fantasy-cards, The Continuum just to name a few.

If I can buy, trade, or auction the cards it's a TCG.

Hey, I did work for Fantasy game store for a year, I know the difference between CCG and TCG. The card rarity structure is totally different for both of them.

I haven't heard any of those game you mentioned, but I have tested 5 other OCCGs in the past few months. Only one of those you had an option to trade with others. All of them were 100% free, so there was no real need to trade options as every card was available other ways. If the only way to get the cards is buying them online shop then its "real" TCG. Good example of this is Magic: The Gathering Online. Buying cards online makes the game feel like a scam unless there is thousands of players and hundreds of playable cards people actually want AND you have a choice to make real money out of it.

I bet maybe one of those games will meet the requirements for TCG.

if we were talking about Collectible card games sure, but we are not. We are talking about Trading card games.
The name is the definition. If you can Trade your cards with other players, then it is a Trading card game

ok, all those 3 games you mentioned happen to be TCGs and they have been online since 2006 to 2008. I wouldn't call that a sudden flux.

Impressive and good looking game! Maybe try it out some day :P.

Only the "Some of the features" is pretty overwhelming, for your mainpage.

Yeah, couldn't find the right words there :P. To me it's a bad thing. It's kinda synoptic (is this right? This was babelfished) and heavy.
