Programming Books
« on: May 02, 2007, 01:14:58 PM »
I thought this might be an interesting exercise. Answer each question and we'll compile a list at the end.

What programming books do you have/use?

Which one is your favorite/most useful for what you do?

Which would you recommend to a new programmer?

Which would you recommend to an existing programmer that wants to learn a new language?

Well let's see

Programmin Books
- All PHP and MySQL related books from 2004 through 2006
- Data Structure For Game Programmers
- New Riders: Core Techniques and Algorithms in Game Programming
- Game Development and Production
- No Starch: OO PHP Concepts, Techniques and Code
- PHP Game Programming
- Programming Multiplayer Games
- Sams Teach Yourself Game Programming in 24 hrs
- Game Programming Gems 1
- Premier Press: Character Development and Storytelling for Games
- New Riders: Game Architecture and Design
- and probably some more, but those were the ones that I find I should mention

As for my favourite book... I don't really know.

What would I recommend to new Programmers? Well, that depends on what kind of programmers they want to become.
For PHP I would  probably suggest the No Starch: OO PHP book as it teaches you a lot of usefull stuff that helps a lot in developing a game.

For the rest: can't really tell.

Oh just one more thing: The PHP Game Programming book is not a good source for making a game. Or at least that's the impression I got. If you want to see the game they create in this book, take a look at mdshare's site. It's called Kiddy Kartell.

I've got a ton of books but I never really use them anymore. The only ones I do use are the ones I have for school, like Advanced Data Structures in Java.
