Forum mergers
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:23:56 PM »
Hi,

I'd like to suggest the following changes to the forums:

  • Delete/archive "new users" forum & and create a new "New here? Say hi" topic
  • Delete/archive "the starting line"
  • Move "help, suggestions, feedback" to the bottom
  • Merge "code help" into coding discussion. Make it more clear that this is about coding of games not "learning to write PHP"
  • Merge "revenue" into game design. Put this one first as it is the most useful & interesting one.
  • Merge "hosting" into game management
  • Archive "general game discussion" and subforums and create a new "Other" forum
  • Merge "projects" and "advertisements" into a single forum
  • Archive/delete "marketplace"

The point of all this is to do something about the huge number of forums per threads/posts that exist.

Just some ideas and quite happy to have a debate!

Chris

"<chris_> andrewjbaker, please go post on my forum merger thread :p
<chris_> and preferably agree with me though that is up to you  ^^"

I agree Chris. ;D

I strongly disagre. This would make the forum unusable to me since I already have trouble finding my own posts :)

We should have more subboards, not less.

The one thing I notice is that new people seem to accidentally post on old topics because they are at the top of the forum categories, then after they see their mistake they make a new topic asking if the forum is inactive. Lowering the number of forum categories would keep that from happening all the time.

That said, I don't even bother browsing through the forum categories, I mainly just use "Recent Posts" section to see what threads to reply to. Also I'm just fine with the status quo, this forum is definitely doing something right, no matter how the categories are set up  :)

All your posts in one convenient location!
Take a note that there are 66 PAGES listing my posts :) There is no way I could find anything via that feature.

Yeah, this is what I normally do too. In fact, to me, it'd be kinda' nice if we could increase the number of items in the recent posts section to maybe 20?

Yeah, I was lobbying for it for ages :D 20 recent posts and/or just post only one post per thread, so you can quickly see where the chnages were.

The increase of recent posts list proposal has my ongoing unconditional support :D

While I do hate hijacking a thread, I am glad this was mentioned. As you may recall, I did not like the idea of just increasing the recent post number. However, I *did* like the idea of only showing recent TOPICS, versus POSTS, but it slipped my mind as it was just a vague reply in an unrelated thread. I've changed it so that only the most recent topics are displayed and it has been increased from 7 to 10.
