Game Design board
« on: May 30, 2009, 03:18:55 AM »
I propose a new top level board "Game Design", purpose: everything regarding game mechanics (no programming, no webdesign)

It would be quite handy because now the Game Design topics are scattered among General Chat and Text Based games, sometimes even Coding Help. It is hard to find them.

Done :)

We are going to be doing some moving and re-arrangement of other boards to bring a more cohesive feel to the forums. Any suggestions are more then welcome :)

I was thinking about making the Game Design purely "Game Mechanics & Theory" board.
Topics like "Language Files" would rather go to "General Game Discussion". Topics like "Hey - I have a cunning plan!" fits more to "Projects" board. The current topics choice there is misleading...

I would even rename it to "Game Mechanics & Theory" or something similar, because everyone perceive word "Design" quite different :D

As for the boards order it's better to put "General Game Discussion" at the top (or just below Starting Line), this will reduce misplaced topics since the "catch all" will be the most visible and accessible.

We can certainly rename the category, actually it sounds much better.

However.

General is not going to go on the top again. It's been to much of a catch all because it's been on the top. We bumped it down to the bottom so ppl will scan the other categories first before just posting to the general forum.

I know all the re-arranging came as a surprise, we've been talking about it for a bit now but something about this morning motivated us both. We are not fully done yet but we want things to settle first before moving forward.

The whole idea is "this is what I want to post" and seeing a category that fits that post. Also, on a side note, the categories will never be more then 2 deep (except archives). When you come to a board you want to see ALL categories available. SMF only lists the first set of sub's, the secondary only gets listed if you click the parent. So again seeing everything up front will hopefully aid in new comers posting to the correct category.

I hope everyone enjoys the new changes and find it easier to navigate.. And yes Chris we are already talking about the PBBG Contest #2. No definitive dates yet but we are at least staring to move forward in that direction =)~

It takes you longer to prepare a competition than me to make a full fledged game :) Shame on you :D
