Reputation is a user generated indication of popularity / helpfulness / etc. Users who have 100 or more posts can give or take reputation points from other members in response to their actions on the forum. Having -1 means that someone took a rep point from you.

I went through your posts and decided you deserve +rep at least in total

obviously didn't last long... die4me do you think it's justified? I've seen a way weirder behaviour here, still it was not "rewarder"
...your decision, but to me it seems thoughtless...

weeee... mine's at -1 now too.  It's kinda funny, I spent a minute trying to figure out which post earned me that.. but I gave it up and decided it's the typical "let's make the noobies feel unwelcome" psychology in action.

I'm pretty certain that *not* what most members want, especially the core ones...

Maybe we need a new sticky thread: Reputation changes!

This thread would be where you post who you gave / stole rep from and link to some post or posts that inspired you to do so.

You can give a small explanation afterwards. Though, this probably would be under-utilized but it would stop people from wondering "why" in any case if it were actually used.

I tend not to subtract rep from new members (or many at all, in fact) simply because of some kind of philosophical argument. For one, they may just be learning and thinking they're giving great advice. For another... I might be wrong! lol There are plenty of situations where you have to use an unhealthy technique to accomplish a goal.

But, anyways, I usually give new members a chance to redeem themselves before I go karma-smiting them. :P

I'm amused that the karma system here hasn't broken by now. I mean, there is a need for *one* person, only one that decide to break it :)

Maybe there is not enough people here to have that one person? Or maybe the need for 100 posts first is too much for such a prankster?


I wonder how it works on other forums, there are plenty of much bigger ones and they use the same standard karma system. How come it hasn't become a degenerated feature for them? An intriguing social question...

I've added a rep mod that will log changes in rep. Will be tweaking things, but the basic functionality is there. When you click the scales, a box will appear at the top of the thread asking whether you liked / disliked a post and have the option to leave a comment. It will not be retroactive, but from this point on, you can view your log in your Profile.

hahaha Doesn't that figure! There were some issues with that mod and I didn't like the rep "power" rather than the 1 to 1 ratio we're used to so I've switched to a different one. This one is basically back to normal, but now the log can be found on your profile Summary.

**Edit - Also, this is probably good from a logging perspective as well since it will enable you to track if a particular user is abusing the system!

Also, for this karma system, I'd like to point out that it tracks the post that you press the + or - on. So, as long as you give the rep boost on the appropriate post, they'll even know what post it was that earned them the reputation! How awesome is that? Hooray for logging!

Sorry about that. It's rather silly that it defaults to allowing everyone to give / take points, but not view the log (the exact opposite of the last mod). And, since SMF doesn't inherit the main Members permissions like phpbb, you being a Game Owner stopped you from viewing it. All user groups can now see the log. I will be deleting those entries, BTW, since they were not "real".



JGadrow: yes, there are many benefits to this type of system. However, I am hesitant to add anything here that is not specifically requested by another member, so I never considered adding it before. I am glad that people are finding it beneficial.
