Suggestion for New Board
« on: August 07, 2009, 07:58:10 AM »
Thought of this based on something one of the newer members said: Would the creation of a 'Security' board be useful to members of this site? Mabe as a child board of Code Discussion (I think that's the title)?

Might serve as a 'first-stop' for people asking questions regarding code security.

I think it's an option, but not sure it's the right thing to do. Aren't child boards only needed when the parent board is overcrowded? I don't think the code board is active enough. So maybe a sticky and / or article on security are better options? my 2 cents

Boards are for organizational purposes. As far as I know, there's no hardline rule as to when a childboard should be created. It's all up to how granular the site admins want to be on organization.

I'm not exactly certain whether a 'security' board would be popular or not. I have a feeling that if some decent articles were posted there it could be referenced a lot, and it would certainly be a good starting place for someone trying to read up on security practices. Outside of that, I'm not sure of its utility.

We've been going through and *removing* boards so that everything's not spread so thin. That and we're really trying to avoid child boards as much as possible. We also merged all of the articles into a single forum so that that could be the "first stop". So, for anyone just wanting to post a helpful article, I would suggest posting it there.

Thanks, I agree. As you can see, I didn't really see a whole lot of utility for this feature but I wanted to at least have it documented somewhere since I saw someone ask for it. :)

In every forum that ive administered ive allways tried to keep child boards to a minimum....95% of activity is on recent threads and theyre allways at the top if you look at a board directly...(personally i use the unread posts since last visit thing) and if you really really do want to find something then there is allways the search function....generally undrused IMHO.

One thing that i have seen used to good effect is a sticky'd index thread to particularly interesting or relevant or common themes...

Yeah, I use 'unread' link too. As well as the RSS feed to let me know when new topics have been posted. :) And I agree that search is under-utilized. I always try a quick search at least before posting a new topic.

If you are looking for more organization, maybe a sticky could be created that acts like a "table of contents," and every time a new article is posted the sticky is edited.

Would it be possible to be able to modify number of shown "recent posts" in the bottom?

There is already a link just below in the Forum Stats section that says "View the most recent posts on the forum" which will show you the last 100 posts made. It's a happy medium between those that don't enjoy the extra clutter and those that use the feature.

ETA: Alternately, you can click the icon to the left of the Recent Posts section to reach the same extended list.

Top 10 what? There are various Top 10's in the More Stats section. Can't think of anything beneficial beyond what's already listed there.

I think Nyx meant http://community.bbgamezone.net/index.php?action=recent - linked by the icon on the left side of recent posts and "View the most recent posts on the forum."

I personally like the condensed way (no content, just post subjects) better, but I understand it's not that essential

Maybe some mod to exclude double replies? I think most want to know which topics were changed recently, not that there were 5 people replying to it today. This would effectively make the history of changed topics longer without displaying more lines of text.
