BitBucket Offers Free Code Hosting
« on: September 29, 2010, 03:13:04 PM »
I got an email earlier today letting me know that BitBucket has been acquired by Atlassian. They are offering free code hosting (it's a distributed version control system - DVCS - based on Mercurial) that will allow you to create up to 5 user accounts.

They're also offering (until Oct. 3rd) a free tier upgrade to 10 user accounts for a year. I host my own code repository, but figured this might be a useful link for others since here's the features of this:

free hosting
unlimited private repositories
plus Atlassian's support.
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I haven't used Mercurial before. My question is: is it even relevant anymore? Everyone seems to be using Github these days, and everywhere I hear that git is the best DVCS.

Dunno. I use SVN personally. But, if you're needing something free and are completely new to version control... probably not a bad solution since they allow you to create private projects (meaning you didn't just open-source it to the world! lol).
