Finally went with LayeredTech
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:38:06 AM »
I have been undecided for a while, and finally got my second dedicated box for online games with LayeredTech.
They sound reliable, and are relatively inexpensive ($200). Let's see how it goes. I'll keep you updated.

The cheapest one - Layer 1, but with additions.
I've just been contacted by them stating them that I need to send them a copy of my driver's license. :(
I'll go to scan it now.

Having to provide a scan of your drivers license is pretty much standard when getting a dedicated server.

Really? I had never heard about that. Do most reliable companies do that?
I was with LiquidWeb with my other sites, and they never told me to send anything.

LayeredTech is pretty well known for their reputation in dedicated hosting. Good choice and good price.

I'm also curious to know.  Is it worth the price?

Yeah, this is starting to get interesting for me as well. Eventho I won't buy/rent a dedicated server for a long time, I'd still like to know at what price-ranges I'm looking at and what is a fair price.

If you look around you can find good deals on dedicated servers.  I highly recommend http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ when looking for any type of hosting.  I just got a dedicated server a few days ago:

AMD Sempron 2400+
1Gb DDR ram
120Gb EIDE Hard Drive
1500Gb data transfer
100Mbit connection
CentOS 4.4

Cost is only $60 a month since the provider tossed in a free control panel which saves about $25 a month and its unmanaged which saves about another $30 a month.  Of course you must have a good understanding of how to manage a linux server or you will be toast.

Sorry for not writing updates - I've been extremely busy these days.
LT is fine, but I will soon move from their servers, in order to test the latest mediatemple package.
In what refers to management, I have no idea of how to properly manage a server, but I hired an external management company for $29 a month (platinumservermanagement). They help you setup your server's security, and optimise it a bit.

Not bad price at all, would you recommend LT?

My interested is piqued. Any particular thing that makes it worthwhile? Besides the price.
