Good dedicated server companies?
« on: July 19, 2009, 09:30:25 PM »
Over the years, I've come across some good dedicated server companies and some bad ones.
I'll list my good ones first and they're pretty good for online games too.

So, what dedicated server companies have you used?

Well I haven't used my current host for dedicated server hosting, but its there if anyone in New Zealand wants to use it. Haven't had a problem with my current hosting setup.

zykal, can you elaborate on your problems with Dreamhost? I have accounts with both them and 1and1, and so far Dreamhost has been painless, and I really dig their administrative control panels. I've only been with them for a few months now, though, as an experiment, and I'm certainly interested in hearing about the areas where they drop the ball.

I found 1and1 to be stable and reliable with serviceable support, but nothing special. In fact, they may be the most average company I've ever hosted with. On the other hand, I'm still hosting a lot of sites there, so that does say something about the value of reliable and boring. I've never done dedicated with 1and1, although I imagine the experience is similar to hosting shared sites.

The most outstanding support I've ever received has been from Pair Networks (pair.com). Their staff have always been happy to field dozens upon dozens of support questions from me, and the longest I've ever waited for a reply was perhaps one hour, with most responses coming back within ten to twenty minutes.

I have a friend who works at Rackspace and I can say that internally, at least, they definitely have their act together.

Earlier this week I set up a site on Heroku (heroku.com). They're a Rails host, and what makes them noteworthy is that they developed a plugin for your Rails app that gives you one-click-deployment and a bunch of other slick site admin features accessible through a command line interface. Their support staff have been very responsive as well, and overall I'm loving Heroku and plan to keep pushing Rails apps over there in the future.

I don't know if it's relevant but I used dreamhost webhosting and it was *painfully* slow, in the end I found myself not using it at all, so I canceled it.
It was like at least 5 seconds before the page even started to load and FTP was slow too.

I googled and found out, that this experience is pretty common

dreamhost dropped the ball on alot of things.

Updating was a major ball drop for them.

they never updated any of there server software until there was a problem.

not talking about my dedicated server, I'm talking their internal network.

SO much so that dreamhost got hacked by the same bug multiple times.

wasn't till it effected there user base that they upgraded (3500 passwords compromised)

FTP is slow

Downloads are slow from my dedicated server to my home and all from one dedicated server to another dedicated server in there own building.

they charge for tons of random things to be done.

like most hosts I know will re Image your server for free if you want them too.

Plus they were horridly over priced (at the time) for what you could get.

dedicated host is definatly an investment and with any investment you should do research, not just take everyone's first word for gold.

look up info about who you are thinking about going with .

Look up terms like hostname hacked; leaked; problems; headaches; ect

Just to see what everyone else is saying also.

How long have you been with them? I'm looking for a host due to my game being almost ready and I'm gonna try a few places out first.  I think I'll try these out, Thier site looks good.
