Is godaddy as bad as the two sites that i just found say?
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:45:08 AM »
First up there's this site, http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/godaddy-isnt-pretty-you-thought and then there's this second one http://nodaddy.com/. And it sounds, as if, godaddy is just a giant steaming pile of you know what. And because of that i am worried that me even using them for my domain name registration(got it when it was on sale and then got it once more when they were on sale) might have just messed up. Also, i was thinking, about using them as a webhoster when the game was small and not exactly big enough to warrant a vps.  Now then according to that there's all kinds of these horrible problems. I don't use .net at all, i'm pure on php/mysql backend and thus i don't know if it's that bad or if this was some sort of select problems thing.

I was going to use them since it seemed to be not that expensive for what it was going to give me ie no limit on bandwith(as in small amounts) 1GB per database and thus it should go rather well, and also the ability to have it hopefully run.

From those two sites and the people on there it sounds like half of the stuff won't even work at all, that alone isn't making me feel too good about actually going with them when before i thought it would be worth it to have in teh beginning.

It's probably just a few people who have had horrible support and thus are jading the entire thing, but i just want to make sure before i even attempt to get a hosting enviroment from them.

I haven't looked at the sites you linked, but yeah, godaddy sucks.

Your milage may vary, but the consensus among developers is that they're a poor registrar, an atrocious host, and an unethical business.

I use godaddy.

- Registrar of domains - quite decent, I would use them, with a bit of suspicion through :)
- Shared Hosting - not sure... they went down the drain in last years, more and more laggy. On the other hand they treat customers professionally here (when you abuse resourcres they move you to a separate server and give you enough time to solve the problem)
- VPS - NEVER.

Godaddy several years ago was pretty awful.  I believe they intentionally hid where you could modify the domain name server address so you'd be forced into using their servers for hosting.

Today, they're fine, IMO, for registering a domain.  I would never use them to host my server though.  HostGator, and several others, are 10x better for this.

PS.  If you want to use hostgator, I have an affiliate like that will make me a few dollars if you so care to use it : )

I use Godaddy as a registrar...  Zero problems so far, but I guess I'd better read up on them :-\

I would never use GoDaddy as a registrar, I've heard too many horror stories about them locking domains after a single spam complaint and the procedure for transferring a domain away from them is onerous.

And there was the thing a couple years ago where the CEO said the problem with Abu Gharaib was not that the U.S. was torturing people, but that it wasn't torturing enough because that's the only language those people understand. I was not exactly keen ti give money to support that.

We've been forced to use GoDaddy as a registrar a couple times and have regretted it each time. While nothing too terribly awful has happened, it has been a headache. They put on auto renewal without notice or consent and make the process of transferring a domain away from them lengthy, convoluted, and just downright irritating.

I've slowly been consolidating all of our domains via DirectNIC. While they are not always the cheapest, we've been with them for years and have never had had a single issue.

I think this is a case of going with the Devil you know vs. the Devil you don't know.  Godaddy, though not my favorite, is well known and has provided decent service and pricing over the last 2-3 years.  I'm not familiar with any other major domain name registering service.

I just checked and this statement from nodaddy.com "This site was created by Gordon Lyon (AKA Fyodor) after GoDaddy intentionally shut down one of my most important sites (SecLists.Org) without even giving me a reason." - this site that was supposed to be "shut down without a reason" contains malware (do not visit it via IE, not that I would accuse anyone on this forum of using one...) :) They have guts to say that they were shut down wrongfully, really :D

This also reminds me of the PayPal horror stories about cancelling the service (after checking the topic further, it turned out that these sites were finacial pyramid schemes so my only complain is that PayPal didn't shut them down earlier) or about Google horror stories (after checking the list of top websites that lost rank in search engines I was not surprised at all, actually I was surprised these got to the top in the first place).

I have heard various horror stories about various major providers of various things and... strangely, each time I pursued the topic further I always found out these were just lies or at least facts that were missing critical details.

Just to throw in my two cents as well, I've been using GoDaddy for domain registration for over a year now (and have gone through a renewal too) without any issues. I'd heard the horror stories, but I've not had any problems at all.

I would like to confim that Godaddy buys for themselves the domains that you check and haven't bought yourself (a few days/months after you checked availability of these). A huge majority of interesting domains that I checked on over last years ended up being set as premium domains and parked on Godaddy.

Using their search domain feature is not recommended (unless you decide to buy immediately).

I'm really glad that i just do a whois <domain name> via the command line then. Also I imagine that other registrars do the same thing. Since it gives them more money. But I doubt it's every single domain. I think it's if more than one person 'searches' for it. Since needlessly buying up every single domain that anyone searches for is just plain stupid(as far as the costs to justify)

I have had several domains registered via godaddy with no issues.

Their servers however do get slower and slower over time. A fix I heard of is to drop your DB, and then rebuild it. When it gets rebuilt it's normally done on one of their latest servers, and so is typically much faster. There is a forum I visit, and the guy who runs it does this every 6 months to a year. He swears by it.
