Offering free unlimited server hosting.
« on: February 17, 2009, 03:57:24 PM »
Here's the deal. A while back I did some work for a hosting company Neoservers.com. In partial payment they gave me free unlimited server space. I've hosted a few projects on there in the past and currently host a couple friends pages. But lately it's pretty much been going to waste.

NeoServers has had 3 periods of downtime lasting more than 24 hours in the past five years, once was due to an explosion at the data center and the other two to scheduled maintenance.

I would like to host your game, with provisions.

Provision one, I would like to help design, maintain or write for your game.
Provision two, it has to be unique in gameplay. I don't want to see a Legend of the Green Dragon clone.
Provision three, if it has a pay membership option I get free membership.

That's it.

A little about myself.

I am a 27 year old college student studying Communications with a focus on Journalism and a minor in computer sciences.
I have coded and successfully ran my own Mud for a period of five years in the early nineties.
I know Basic Html, PHP and CSS.

I can write, I have won awards and have been nationally recognized for my short stories and essays.

Anyone can apply for this, but only one will be chosen you can notify me of your interest at pdquinn@students.pima.edu or here in pm. Although I prefer E-mail.

Just tell me a little about your project with a outline and some art or text from it.

Thanks,
Patrick

I must say I'm interessed, although I would like to know a bit more;

Windows or Linux hosting?
MySQL database? Which version? How many of them?
If its Linux server does it support Cron Jobs?
What kind of CPU it has?
What admin panel it has, CPanel or something else?

I can send you pics of my cocks if you want reference.

one question, aside of the provisions stated

You own the hosting account, so anything uploaded to the server is actually yours .... who says you won't ditch the game owner and steal his/her site.

a google check on Murderousintent@gmail.com reveals always a lot , seems you are looking since long to get a foothold in this industry but doesn't has the funds or knowledge for it.

You can force me to sign a contract if you need me too, I am totally willing to do that to protect your interests and properties. I'm fairly trust worthy, but taking my word at it would require initial trust.

Yeah I must agree, every time I see an offer of free hosting, I always tend to see the worst case scenario, me personally I would rather root the bill and fork out for a VPS, then possibly risk losing hundreds of hours of development time.

Though that's a worst case scenario, in no way am I trying to imply that this would be your end goal.

I agree with that, yet what happend with all the posts I can retrieve from google from the multiple projects you had done by others ....

sorry that I sound negative, but like said previous best is to always look at a worse case screnario and do some digging

holy bejoolies that's a old post on Great Games Experiment.

That project has long since been abandoned. I still own the rights to those projects since the ideas were mine however aside from the music all artists retained their own works.

The problem with that is most of the recruited team members willing to work for free have schedule constraints involving school and jobs.

There's a couple other IP's I own i have a interest in developing in the future, but at the moment I have abandoned my goals and am working on helping others.

Not to say there is nothing in it for me. By helping others I am networking and gaining resources for my future projects.

that will be a problem, as not many in this browsergame market like to have their source code, ideas etc stolen in a certain way

ever heard of black box coding ? More will trust you if you are able to do some black box programming.

You have hosting, there are 100s of free game engine scripts , so why the need of others .... in a hidden way having sole ownership of everything that is submitted as you hold the hosting account

I think you misunderstand the use of the word "resource".
What I mean to say is Human Resource, the skills, Aide and tips of others.
A person is more likely to help someone who has worked on their own project than someone just flat out asking.

I understand the suspicion you hold "if it's to good to be true, it usually isn't true".

But then again I offered the willingness to sign a contract therefor protecting the creator of his IP and digital goods.

I totally agree with mdshare there is absolutely nothing to say you won't steal a script or even the entire game code.

Being the host owner, I find your proposal quite strange as not many people offer hosting and want a part in the coding of the game also, unless they were looking to benefit themselves in the long run. Let's face it, you can't get something for nothing nowadays...

And yea, free unlimited hosting with coding support from the host owner does sound too good to be true and I would advise anyone looking to take up this offer to fully investigate. It's nothing personal but you can never be too sure over the internet. As for a written contract, I don't think it would mean anything tbh and anyone looking at a deal like this needs to be cautious.

I personally don't tend to trust individuals offering hosting, even more so when it's free! I owned an online RPG about 2 years ago and I was hosted by an individual who I'd been hosted with for nearly a year. After I recently renewed my domain with him (the domain was worth over $5,000 in accordance with dnscoop) he had closed his hosting and shut down the servers claiming there was a hardware error. It became apparent that I had been scammed and the guy got away with my domain and all my game codes and later sold the domain on (as it was registered through his hosting company).

Ok, so on top of a legally binding contract (I'm not sure how you feel this would not be protective) I can also offer 10+ in referalls from people I know both personal and business including the owner of Neoservers.com, a film and t.v composer and someone who works for the digphilly.

ok I checked out neoservers, which seems to be nothing more than a reseller of  Silicon Valley Web Hosting, Inc.

neoservers owner has also a diff hosting company errr reselling which isdathorn.com and is reslling for SoftLayer Technologies Inc.

One word of advice in this industry , sorry Pdquinn is to NEVER trust resellers.

Well i say never trust free resellers that offer you unlimited anything. Someone has to pay for it and that can dry up at anytime leaving you site less and all of your hard work gone

Erm, you need to check again I know the owner, personally. Neoservers has been in that data center longer than SVWH, and who is isdathorn.com? It doesn't even exist.

Are you going out of your way to discredit me? Making false accusations now?

Neoservers is not, and has never been a reseller. I have physically worked on those servers.

http://whois.domaintools.com/neoservers.com

IP Address:    208.69.178.152  http://whois.domaintools.com/208.69.178.152

So if longer than why using a SVWH server ? something doesn't fit if you ask me ....

http://whois.domaintools.com/dathorn.com and no clue how I came up with this need to check back why

Are you serious?

If you go to dathorn on whois you get      animecards.org, webulex.com, webhostingtalk.com, thegaminzone.com, phpbb.com, neoservers.com, lunarpages.com, hostgator.com, csnation.net, whreviews.com.

Phpbb.com honestly. You think Dathorn owns PHPbb?

Its related because they offer the same services or similar services. Not actually related as in owner or reseller.

This is getting sad.

Here from the owner himself

"Neoservers purchased colocation space with Simpli Hosting, Inc, out of Market Post Tower in downtown San Jose, CA, back in January of 2004.  They own all their equipment and switches.  Simpli Hosting, Inc, was boughtby Silicon Valley Web Host in 2007.  "

Like I said, your allowed your opinion but when you start making uneducated accusations then things get personal and insulting.

I still have yet to see you explain how a legally binding contract would not protect someones property.

just my 2 Cents regarding a common fallacy, but a legally binding contract doesnt protect your IP....it just allows you to seek recompense, that is if you can actually persue it....
