Web Design Pricing
« on: November 09, 2008, 01:52:59 AM »
I don't know if this is where this post should go, but I'm planning on starting a web design business but currently do not know how I'm going to charge for my work. A local web design company charges $350 for initial start-up which only covers up to 8 pages. They also charge $72 yearly for hosting, $35/per page past 8 pages, and $25 monthly for 4 updates per month.

Another website I've looked at charges $32/per month for their web design. I believe this included hosting costs and domain name costs.

I was wondering if these are good ways to charge and how much do you guys charge for web design.
I'm not slacking off. My code's compiling.

That really depends I think. There are many factors in a business which decide the price. Who are you going to sell it to? To local busnisses or by internet? for example. And think about quality, speed, support, ... And you can sell in very different packages etc. Wil you only do webdesign or also hosting domains etc.? Or are just talking about freelancing?

Sure. Here is the main site http://www.hoptoitwebdesign.com.

Here are the websites on the Portfolio page:
http://www.eaglehavenwinery.com (This is the best looking one)
http://www.skagitpeople1st.org
http://www.sowa.org/SkagitCounty

I now realize that due to my dyslexia, this post has no relevance to the quote.

The eagle haven winery - doesn't use separate css stylesheets, failed validation.

The portfolio and the main website looks really... unprofessional. It uses frames, and none of the websites use graphics in the design other than as background or banner.

I wouldn't buy a design from them if I had a million bucks to waste...

I've showed this site to a few friends of mine and then showed them some of my own designs. They all said mine were better.

Also, does anyone know of a good site that explains how one should go about pricing websites? I saw a site ad for one a few days ago, but I forgot what it was.

When I did freelance web design, pricing typically went: "what are they expecting to pay?".

I think that the best guideline I've heard is to start at $200 for a simple site. After each completed project, raise your price by $50. When you hit the point where 50% of your prospects walk away, drop back down one $50 increment - and that is your ideal price. Repeat the process as often as necessary.

Really bad layouts... It's unproffesional, oldfashioned and I wouldn't pay $100 for it. Maybe $20 at max...
And I know omething about it because my father sells websites, and layouts... And would hire someone who makes something like that IN A HUNDRED YEARS. Maybe this sounds a bid cruel, but it's really not smart to buy a layout that bad for that price. So I hope no one on this forum will fall for some thing like that ever again :P.

Actually, his examples are quiet unattractive. My template is at: http://stroceta.net/TEMPLATE/
Still needing an AJAX coder to do some AJAX for me before I can use it :(

EDIT: He also doesn't advertise or put his bests works up there because he was so popular he kinda killed his own company so he wouldn't have so much to do.

Ajax should take care of that. The ajax script I gave link to is very light and quite fast, so it will take make the loading time down.

I can send you pics of my cocks if you want reference.
