Where you host ?

Hello,

 I am interested to hear where you host your games. I got a vps in hostforweb. It has been relatively good so far, not great. Recently they upgraded their vps software management from virtuozzo to some other and everything got worse. Especially mysql is going like a turtle.

 Any ideas ?

Well no game hosted yet, currently have that locally, but i have my joomla based site on http://zendfree.com, its free hosting with php and mysql. I have to say since I have been with them I have only experienced one short term downtime that I am aware of which was due to a server move.And Hamster a admin and former owner of the site, was actually kind enough to answer my email to his personal address to solve a issue i had with the server move. And the forums themselves are quite helpful for newcomers as well.Also from there TOS

Resource Usage

Any action or script performed or executed on your account that generates high CPU or RAM usage is not allowed as it will affect the overall performance of the server, thus affecting the other users as well.

Such actions or scripts include, but are not limited to:

    * Cron jobs that are executed more often than once per 15 minutes or generating a lot of cpu load.
    * Sending an insane number of emails within a short span of time.
    * Any scripts running in the background on the server.
    * Out of date and insecure websites and/or scripts that are easily abused/hacked.
    * Socket usage.


I am more then certain if you talk with the admins, they are quite friendly you can work something out.

Like all hosts am sure your mileage will vary, but i personally have had a great experience with them, as a non game host,am sure if your game was within reason cron jobs etc there would be no problem

what if some game devs/game related site owners put heads together and get like a testing dedi server

if 10-15 can donate like $10 a month a small dedi can be afforded.

now lets say potential game owners can have a alpha game on it with 1 mysql and a limit on cron usage

potential game owners agree that the sponsors of the dedi box (shared actually as more than one will use it) will be advertised on their projects for free as long they reside on the box

... just a thought ...

I actually considered setting up some ultra-cheap hosting for people willing to build games - something in the region of $2-$3/month for a basic account with up to 500MB storage, and 10GB bandwidth or something - but I couldn't figure out whether there would actually be enough interest in the idea for me to invest in getting it set up.
