Hello!
« on: September 01, 2009, 02:48:04 PM »
Hello everyone!

Just joined, but been reading alot here during the last month or so. Figured it might be time to introduce myself properly.

My name is Marcus, I am 21 years old and work as a painter (As in painting busses, trucks, etc).

I have been fooling around with coding since I was ten years old. At that point I decided I wanted to create my own website and learned basic HTML. I learned quite much and had had a running site including frames and a ugly background quite soon. It wasn't anything more than a presentation of myself, but still more than most ten year olds managed. When I at age 11-12 heard my classmate started to learn html I decided that the only right thing to do was to learn JavaScript in order to show him that I kick ass. Managed to do some smaller applications and clones, but my biggest achievment must have been when I managed to make my very own "learn math"-program.

After that I have been fooling around with pretty much everything. My bookshelf is full of primers for languages such as Visual Basic, C++ and PHP. I also worked with Delphi and Flash for a while. But as I said, I only have been fooling around, at this point I havent had a single project in two years but I am eager to start again, this time with PHP, and finaly finnish something that people would enjoy.

I had interest in making my own game for a few years, and just recently relized that the only way to go was to create my very own browser-based game. This because I feel that creating a browser-based game would be much less demanding than doing a online game in C++ or Flash.

So, thats pretty much me. I tried to keep it short. Expect another thread from me in the "Projects"-section soon, will be making a thread there following my first project from start to finnish.

Best Regards

Hey, Evil Genius, that sounds great! Good luck with your project. If finishing is important, I suggest you keep it simple. You can create great and simple games in a relatively short time period.

Hope you'll enjoy your stay ^^.

You can make boardgame or cardgame (the things people play without computer). These are even less demanding when it comes to startup skills (but more demanding when comes to designer skills).

I actually almost made one. Was a project in school with two of my friends. But we never finnished the rules and kind of forgot about the game due to semester. I like learning and enjoy coding as long as it doesn't get to overhelming (spelling?). I am also a big fan of the 'anytime, anywhere'-concept that BBG's offer. My main ambition is to create something people can enjoy without needing a big crew and and many years to complete it. I like to see results. Sorry for missing linebreaks, my cell doesnt seem to have a button for that.

Thank you all, I already feel like I'm a part of the group ;)

Was thinking that I might aswell ask here, if anyonen knows any good tutorials to re-learn PHP!? I could pick up my book and start from scratch, but feels like I would jump over the pages I feel I remeber and thus maybee miss something important. Thanks in advance.

Id say have a quick look through w3schools and tizag, then make smething. I find when Imwriting something I want to write, not copying a tutorial, I learn far quicker.

Forgot PHP? Then now's the perfect time to learn Ruby on Rails.  :D

Seriously, though, it's something to consider. The question comes up a lot on Stackoverflow and there are some good threads discussing it. Since it seems you're already familiar with a few different environments and aren't shy about moving between technologies, I would strongly suggest looking at Rails as your operative web platform.

Stick with PHP or Learn Rails?

Torn between PHP Framework and Rails

Should I learn PHP or Ruby on Rails?

If you're committed to PHP, though, I'd recommend that you start monitoring DZone's PHP section - http://dzone.com/links/tag/php.html - as a lot of good articles aimed at all levels of developer tend to bubble up there. Places like phpdeveloper.org and planet-php.net tend to error on the side of news and community interest instead of more instructional content, in my opinion.

Yes, forgot ;)

As I said my skills never been better than you can learn from 'get started'-book. I assume I could take a look at ruby. The thing about php is that I still got some knowledge in it and Im tired of 'hello world's :p
