Hello everyone.
« on: July 03, 2009, 04:36:15 PM »
Well, introduction...
I'm here to expand my knowledge and hopefully give some pointers to those who, like me, want to make a game but have no idea where to start.

And background on why I want to for those who like reading longer posts...
I have always loved playing browser based games when i was younger, even today i still thoroughly enjoy them. But like everyone and their mother it has always been a dream to actually own and manage a game myself. So when I originally got accepted to into college, I had planned on minoring in computer science with a focus in programming.

Unfortunately, the classes for my intended major (chemistry) conflicted with nearly every CS class I wanted to take. So here I am 4 years later, I just graduated with degrees in chemistry and physics, and nearly a minor in mathematics but not a single class in programming.

Of course, now that I've graduated, I find myself with a ridiculous amount of free time. So I figure it is a great time to seriously look into teaching myself the basics I need to create my own game :)

Welcome to the community! If you're serious about creating your own bbgame, this is the best (and only) place to start. Just browse through the (older) posts and you'll find tips and links.

The most recommended languages you should know are:

 - HTML (duh...)
 - CSS (for the layouting)

 - PHP (for the programming)
 - SQL with a MySQL database

Additionaly you might want to work with a framework, then there are just a few. Then look at this post.

Another good place to start is Building BrowserGames (blog).

As for more general game design there are also some blogs around, but less focussed on browser based design.

Hi. I just joined, but I have been interested in PBBG's for the last few years. It seems every summer I start a new project but they always end up stopping when classes start. I have at this point a bunch of different ideas. I am more interested in the theory behind games and discussing the futures of games then just sharing plugs...although I will probably play your game if I haven't already :)
