lol, yes I am in the middle of designing a browser game, and have gotten a little stuck on a couple of things, the main one is the messaging system.... I want users to be able to message each other but am not sure on how to implement this. I only began learning php aprox a few months ago now and am not to sure on the way to go about this section... got any ideas?

I will go check out that link in a bit too but for the most I need the site to stay completely accessible for my namesake's reason :)  so I thought people with a like mind would be a great place to go for help with this for me

and hi there... sexy beast huh? lol watching you, dont want to be lead astray off down the garden path :P

You could? that would be great! I have the code for bloggs and forums and a shoutbox but want players to be able to message each other in a similar manner to email but only within the site, so it would run off the database , but that is all I know... as for that site you gave, I have spent many hours emailing with Luke, the main writer for that site, I was the one that encouraged the two part posts on accessibility,  if you were following his posts....

I am only coding my site part time at this time as I am a full time mother and studying as well and with my disabilities that is a full schedual and so am up from 7a.m to around the 1-4a.m each day just so I can get my study and some small amount of coding done :P that is if I dont fall asleep in my chair first :P lol

I cant offer payment for any code as I dont have funds left after getting my domain and server here in new zealand and over spent the little I had to start with lol, but any and all help offered is most greatfully apreciated from anyone

thanks

Hello blindangel, welcome.

As far as accessibility is concerned, that will mostly be dealt with by valid XHTML and CSS coding. You should visit the Web Content Acessibility Guidelines for detailed instructions on creating an accessible site.

As far as the messaging system, it's amazingly simple once you think about it. Here's a glimpse into not just the relevant code, but how to code.

First, you must fully realize your problem before you can attempt to find a solution. In your case, you want a message system.

So, let's start at the beginning. What is a message? For our purposes, let's define it as a textual transmission between two account holders.

So, we know that we have at least 3 parts to a message: the sender, the recipient, and the text message. Now, I'm not sure how familiar you are with databases but our situation is a one-to-one relationship. Meaning, the sender can send the message to exactly one recipient. So, a single database table works for us.

You simply need to create a database table with fields to store the message id, the sending account holder's id, the receiving account holder's id, and the text message. You could extend this to store more information later on, such as date / time and the like, but this should suffice for a basic example. You'll create the message id simply to provide a primary key for the table. This creates an identity for each row so you can reference it individually. For faster searching, you'll want the recipient id to also be an indexed column and maybe the sender id as well for your administration purposes; however, that depends upon your system needs.

Now, you need to create the relevant forms for the players to create a text message which, I hope, you can figure out on your own. If not, I suggest learning how to handle HTML forms first. However, assuming that you do, you perform an insert operation on the table once the form is processed with the submitted data. You store the data in the relevant portions of the table (recipient in recipient id, sender in sender id, etc.) and that's it!

When an account holder looks at their inbox, you simply select from the message table any messages where the recipient id matches that of the account holder and display those messages. Since you indexed the recipient id column, it should be a very fast operation.

Hope that helps!

 :-[ Oh thank you makariverslund!

I am slightly embarrassed to see how simple it is... I just had a complete mind block over this :)

I have no trouble with databases, forms and accessibility, I mentioned accessibility as a need due to most keep giving me answers that result in inaccessible answers, but this is great and requires little coding and can be done with little effort....

Thank you ever so much

CrazyT thank you and no you didnt ask for payment of any kind but I thought it was best to let it be known right from the start that this game is being done with a budget of 0 apart from the server and domain costs which I am unable to avoid :P

So far on this site everyone has been so great to me, how can I not stay here and keep you all up on my site and learn from you all, and maybe even help a few in the process :P

well time to dash for a short while so take care all till I return!

No problem. And there's no need for embarassment. Everyone begins the same: as a beginner. ;)

thanks and yes we all make mistakes and have mind blocks and not just the newby's either,

I am new to the php side but have qualifications in several different programming languages, web design, databasing  and am currently expanding those qualifications to cover php... here's hoping I manage to make it :P

I have come to like php a great deal in the short time of using it and what ever I can learn from people will help.

I note that you have a few programming languages under your belt also and it is nice to chat with fellow programmers with similar intrests, namely browser games :D

How long have you been coding in php for?

I've been using PHP for about 5 years. I'm trying to pick up C#.NET now. After that is Java ;)

wow that is a lot of experience :D

I know the basics of php and have been learning for aprox three nearly four months now and still have much to learn. maybe you could share some of your experience in my direction :D

as for the c#.net, ouch not my area learning c++ was not a good experience for me but it was the staple for the course of study I was in at that time.
Jade, dos, linux, sql, oricle are more me but want to branch into php to further the web design I have already like html, css, javascript and so on

A fellow Kiwi, welcome aboard.

There are a number of people on this forum who really know their stuff (makari included), The best part is that most are also willing to help out as long as they can see your putting some effort in yourself.....Hopefully youll feel right at home here and I will be particularly interested in seeing what you come up with.

I agree, these forums are so good because most people are willing to put back in what they get out.

That reminds me, (and sorry for going off topic) did anything end up happening on that wiki topic?

Well I have recieved a little help already and am very greatful for it, but as for contributing to the forum... at this stage I am still far to much of a beginner but will help where I can, I just dont want to put someone wrong and waste their time in coding something the wrong way  or that doesnt work.

but I will help in whatever ways I can :D

Thanks to those who have helped me so far and I look forward to seeing what else the brilliant minds of today can create in code tomorrow :D

Dont be afraid to write something if it is wrong. We all do every now and then, and we learn from our mistakes.

No one is going to jump down your throat for writing something that might wrong. Im sure we would be more disappointed if you potentially had the answer and didnt reply.

Personally, I always try and use constructive criticism. I can't say that I succeed 100% of the time, however. But I'm pretty sure I've never 'jumped down someone's throat' without giving a reason. Although, I have had my intentions misread at least once. lol

Well thank you all, the compliments are very sweet, as for my knowing lots... well maybe but very little that I see as much help but I will post if I think I may be able to help.

There is nothing wrong with constructive critisum  and it is a great way to learn, its those that sit there and pretty much tell you that you are stupid due to getting it wrong, but dont think I will find that here, but I do have a major confidence problem, to the point of sometimes frustrating my husband :P

But I will try to step out of my comfort zone a little futher than I have in joining the forum and see if I can provide some help to others to :D

Thank you all for your understanding, it goes a long way to showing the great personalities you have :)

Take care :D
